Herbstreit graduated from Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. As a quarterback for the Elks, he was the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. He also was a standout basketball and baseball player.

Herbstreit was the first player to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes after the hiring of John Cooper as head coach in 1988.

Herbstreit was a four-year letter winner as a quarterback at Ohio State University from 1989 to 1993. After waiting his turn as a Buckeye starter behind Greg Frey and Kent Graham, Herbstreit finally led the team as a senior in 1992.

Herbstreit passed for 1,904 yards that season, including four 200-plus yard games, before losing to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Florida Citrus Bowl.

Herbstreit set the Ohio State record for pass completions (28) in the rivalry game against Michigan, throwing for 271 yards in a 13–13 tie in 1992.

The record stood until 2006, when it was broken by Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

With Amazon taking over the exclusive streaming rights of TNF, it elected to hire two well-known broadcasters to be the voice of the game.

“The hiring of an experienced duo in Michaels and Herbstreit aims to show Prime Video’s commitment to providing the same kind of viewing experience NFL fans have been accustomed to on network television,” as written in the NFL’s official press release of the announcement.

If you’ve already tuned in to “College GameDay” this season, you’ve seen that Herbstreit is still on the broadcast he has called home since 1996.

Marchand reported that Herbstreit is making “$10-plus million per year” with Amazon Prime, bringing him to “in the $18 million per year neighborhood with ESPN and Amazon combined,” although Herbstreit declined to comment when asked.

The length of his Amazon contract has not been released, but it is worth noting that the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” deal with Amazon runs through the 2033 season.

Under the Big Ten’s new TV contract that will go into effect next season and be in place through the 2029 season, ABC and ESPN will no longer have broadcast rights to any Big Ten home games.

Herbstreit, who recently signed a five-year contract to continue calling college football games for ESPN while also signing a five-year contract to call Thursday night NFL games for Amazon, said he is disappointed he’ll no longer have the opportunity to call games at his alma mater on a regular basis after this season.

“I’m sad,” Herbstreit said during a media availability at Ohio State on Friday when asked about the Big Ten leaving ESPN. “I love Ohio State, I love the Big Ten, I love coming into these stadiums. It’s a highlight for me any time we can come here, obviously, or go to Penn State or Wisconsin or any of the (Big Ten stadiums).”

The former Ohio State quarterback acknowledges, though, that the Big Ten leaving ESPN is simply part of the business of college football. And he’s hopeful that he will have more opportunities to call Big Ten games on a regular basis in the future.

Herbstreit says he will be at Ohio Stadium for at least two games this season, telling reporters Friday that he is also slated to call the Buckeyes’ Sept. 24 game against Wisconsin – which will be televised on ABC, though a time for that game has not yet been announced – in addition to Saturday night’s game against Notre Dame, which he’ll call alongside Chris Fowler and Holly Rowe.
