Smith was born in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City and later grew up in Queens, spending time in the LeFrak City neighborhood.
He played some of his earliest basketball at New York’s Riverside Church. Smith attended Archbishop Molloy High School, where he was coached by Jack Curran, the high school coach with the most wins in New York City and New York State history.
Smith was named a McDonald’s All-American in 1983, then played basketball at the University of North Carolina for Dean Smith.
Kenny Smith credits former South Carolina State star Bobby Lewis with his development as a shooter and ballhandler. Lewis averaged 30.9 points per game and was a First Team Division II All-American as a senior at South Carolina State.

Victor Oladipo even appeared as a guest on the show once and mocked Smith over the way he runs.
Furthermore, several years ago the crew – including Chris Webber – had a race to see who was the quickest.
The race spawned the infamous ‘run through the tape’ moment, as Smith slowed down towards the end of the race and was pipped by Webber.
Kenny Smith has never publicly stated what the issue is with his knees, but plenty of people have speculated.
Some people think he has bad tendinitis, while others believe he was born that way and is just knock-kneed.
Some, however, say it’s simply the effects of wear and tear playing in college and the NBA. Because of this he may have had to have surgery.

Kenneth Smith nicknamed “the Jet”, is an American sports commentator and former professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The Jet TNT basketball analyst and former Houston Rockets guard Kenny Smith earned himself the nickname “The Jet” due to his ability to fly up and down the court. Former Rockets guard Jason Terry shares the same nickname.
In 1994 and 1995, Kenny “The Jet” Smith won back-to-back NBA Championships playing for the Houston Rockets. Since retiring, he can be seen on the Emmy-Award winning TNT show, Inside the NBA alongside Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal.
The program has turned from being just a show about basketball into its own phenomena. YouTube is littered with clips and outtakes that have thousands if not millions of views.
But it was when Kenny’s annual summer basketball camp for kids in North Carolina was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic that he came up with the idea for the Jet Academy (named after his nickname “The Jet”).
