Ledecky was also named Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 2017 and 2022, international female Champion of Champions by L’Équipe in 2014 and 2017, United States Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Year in 2013, 2016 and 2017, Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation in 2017, and the ESPY Best Female Athlete in 2022.

In her international debut at the 2012 London Olympic Games as a 15-year-old, Ledecky unexpectedly won the gold medal in the women’s 800-metre freestyle.

Four years later, she left Rio de Janeiro as the most decorated female athlete of the 2016 Olympic Games, with four gold medals, one silver medal, and two world records.

At the 2020 Olympic Games, Ledecky also emerged as the most decorated U.S. female athlete and became the first American female swimmer to win an individual event in three straight Olympiads.

In 2023, she won gold in the 800 meter World Championship, becoming the only swimmer – male or female – to win six World Championship gold medals in the same event.

However, that wasn’t the only reason people were searching Ledecky’s name online in July 2023. Around the same time, rumors began to spread that Ledecky had “come out” as a transgender woman. 

The claim spread as rumors continued to swirl about Lia Thomas, who has faced anti-trans vitriol while becoming the first transgender woman to claim a national title in swimming.

They also spread as World Aquatics, the governing body of swimming, was reported to have an “open category” that would include transgender swimmers in a trial of such a category after effectively banning trans people from competition previously. 

The claim about Ledecky being trans has spread before. In 2022, a screenshot of a Twitter exchange about Ledecky went viral on the platform and spread to other social media platforms like TikTok.

The screenshot showed an exchange between three different Twitter accounts. The first account posted a picture of Ledecky, along with the caption, “Idk that’s just kind of how athletes look.” The second account replied to the post and said, “Very male build. Maybe this individual should compete with the…males.” A different account replied to the second account and said, “That’s Katie Ledecky. A cisgender woman.”

Born Female 

Katie Ledecky is not transgender despite immense gossip surrounding her gender. Instead, Ledecky was born a biological female and still identifies as one.

Katie Ledecky is an American competitive swimmer. She is a 5-time Olympic gold medalist. Likewise, she has broken the world record by winning 15 world championships.

Ledecky was the youngest swimmer to participate in the 2012 Olympics. At the age of 15, Ledecky won her first ever Olympic Gold medal.

In addition, Katie was recognized as the Female Athlete of the Year in 2017 and international female Champion of Champions by L’Équipe in 2014 and 2017.

She set a new American record in 2013 by winning 400-meter freestyle in 3:59.82.
