Whitworth was born on September 27, 1939, in Monahans, Texas, the youngest of three daughters of Morris Whitworth, a hardware store owner and later mayor in Jal, New Mexico, where she grew up. She attended Odessa College.

Initially a tennis player, Whitworth began playing golf at 14. After working with Hardy Loudermilk, she won the 1957 and 1958 New Mexico State Amateur Championships.

At 19, she changed coaches to Harvey Penick and turned pro, joining the LPGA in December 1958.

The statement provided to the LPGA reads, “It is with a heart full of love that we let everyone know of the passing of the winningest Golf Professional ever, Kathy Whitworth.

Kathy passed suddenly Saturday night celebrating Christmas Eve with family and friends. Kathy left this world the way she lived her life, loving, laughing and creating memories.”

Kathy’s cause of death has not been provided at this time. LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan also made a statement in honor of Kathy’s memory, which read, “The golf world and the world in general lost one of its most incredible women with the passing of Kathy Whitworth. Kathy was a champion in the truest sense of the word, both on the golf course and off.”

The statement continued, “In the short time I spent with Kathy, I was truly blown away by her and her approach to the game and to life.

Her strength, insightfulness and vibrancy were obvious from the minute you met her! She inspired me as a young girl and now as the commissioner and I know she did the same for so many others. We all mourn with Bettye, her family and the entire golf world.”

The great golfer once admitted in an interview that she might lose her identification as a golf player if she married despite having Betty Odle as a longtime partner, the most successful golfer.

Kathy Whitworth’s rumored husband, Bettye Odle, was saddened after the tragic death of his longtime partner. When she was alive, her fans were curious to know who her husband was. 

In an interview with a strong source, she was married, but she had to make a lot of sacrifices for her professional golf career. She said her family and marriage were among some of those sacrifices. 

Kathy said, “I wanted to be a golfer. The best I could be, and marriage and golf didn’t mix.”

However, her sacrifice was not about giving up on her family. In the conversation, she added, “I didn’t give up a family, I decided I didn’t want one.”

Whitworth also said she had to make some decisions to dedicate herself to professional golf. She was responsible for the decision, and no one was pointing a gun at her head.
