The Tigers selected Verlander with the second overall pick of the 2004 MLB draft. He made his major league debut with the Tigers in 2005 playing there for 12 years as the ace in their starting rotation, as a key figure in four consecutive American League (AL) Central division championships (2011–2014) and two AL pennants (in 2006 and 2012).
He is among the career pitching leaders for the Tigers, including ranking second in strikeouts (2,373), seventh in wins (183), and eighth in innings pitched (2,511).
The Tigers traded Verlander to the Astros before the 2017 trade deadline, and he went undefeated in his first five starts heading into the postseason.
He was named ALCS MVP, and was co-winner of the Babe Ruth Award as the Astros won the 2017 World Series. In 2018, Verlander became the 114th pitcher in major league history to earn 200 career wins, also becoming the 20th-fastest to reach the milestone (427 starts).
Justin Verlander new deal
Justin Verlander has agreed to a two-year contract with the New York Mets, reportedly worth 86 million dollars.
This is a high-priced deal for the reigning Cy Young award winner, especially given the length of the contract. The Mets signed him to replace Jacob deGrom, who left the team in free agency for the Texas Rangers.
Verlander is one of the best pitchers in the MLB and has defied expectations throughout his career. He has undergone two Yommy John surgeries that could have been career-ending.
Now, at the age of 39, he is one of the highest paid pitchers in the league. There are questions about the high value of the contract, and whether or not he can live up to it.
The total value of the contract came as somewhat of a surprise to many, but it shows the New York Mets’ commitment to winning.
He is the reigning Cy Young award winner, but is also towards the end of his Hall of Fame career. Concerns about his decline fuel the idea that this signing is a mistake. Others are simply excited to see their team add a bonefide star to the pitching rotation.
Justin Verlander signed mets
Starting pitcher Justin Verlander has reportedly reached an agreement with the New York Mets for two years and $86 million with an option to extend the contract for three years.
Although the Mets have not made the transaction official, Jon Heyman of MLB Network broke the news.
Verlander also reportedly met with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the one who most caught his eye was the Metropolitans.
After another tremendous season, Verlander decided to test free agency and leave his remaining one-year, $25 million contract with the Astros on the table.
In total, Verlander has pitched 17 seasons in the Major Leagues. He was named L.A. Rookie of the Year in 2006, L.A. MVP in 2011 and L.A. Cy Young in 2011, 2019 and 2022.
A few days ago Jacob deGrom reached a five-season, $185 million deal with the Texas Rangers deal that ends his stint with the New York Mets , with whom he played since his debut in 2014.
