In August 2012, Randle won the Under Armour Elite 24 dunk Contest and the next day he was named one of the MVPs of the Elite 24 game, where he scored 27 points and led his team to a 164–138 victory.

Considered a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, Randle was listed as the No. 1 power forward and the No. 2 player in the nation in 2013.

The weekend after Thanksgiving in his senior season, Randle fractured his foot playing in a tournament and missed three months as a result.

The Knicks’ leading scorer and rebounder, dealing with an aggravated sprained left ankle, was sorely missed as the Knicks fell to the Heat, 108-101, at the Garden in the opener of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

“I don’t know how close [he was to playing],” coach Tom Thibodeau said after the loss. “I know he worked out before, I just trust him and the medical staff to make that decision. So plan both ways: a plan with him going and a plan if he didn’t go. So, once they make a decision, that’s it. You live with it and you gotta figure it out. We have more than enough.”

They didn’t against the Heat. In four regular season games against Miami, Randle averaged 21 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists, while shooting 41.4 percent from 3-point range.

“Anytime [someone is out], especially an All-Star, we’re gonna miss him,” RJ Barrett said. “But what happens in basketball is, you have [other guys step up]. … So next man up mentality and we have to get better.”

The decision to rule out Randle came after he took part in warmups at Madison Square Garden on Sunday morning. Coach Tom Thibodeau previously had said he was hopeful the two-time All-Star would be available for the opener.

Randle originally injured the ankle in a March 29 win over the Heat and missed the rest of the regular season. He returned for Game 1 of the Knicks’ playoff series against the Cavaliers but largely struggled to find rhythm, and he aggravated the injury in Game 5, missing the second half of the series-clinching win.

The All-Star forward aggravated a left ankle injury late in the first half of New York’s clinching Game 5 win against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night. He left the game and later returned to the bench in street clothes.

Randle missed the last five games of the regular season with the injury but returned to average 14.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists in five games against the Cavaliers.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night, also at Madison Square Garden.
