Primo played basketball for Huntington Prep School in Huntington, West Virginia, where he was teammates with JT Thor.
He transferred to Royal Crown Academic School in Scarborough, Toronto. Primo reclassified to the 2020 class and graduated early.

The 19-year-old Primo averaged 5.8 points on 37.4 percent shooting and 2.3 rebounds in 19.3 minutes per game during his rookie season. He played in 50 games with 16 starts.
This season, the former Alabama star averaged 7.0 points on 34.6 percent shooting, 4.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds over 23.3 minutes per game.
He came off the bench for each of the Spurs‘ first four games but was listed as out on the injury report for San Antonio’s most recent matchup, a 134-122 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon relayed the reason.
The Houston Rockets finished with the worst record last year, followed by the Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers to round out the top five.
The Spurs’ next game will be home on Saturday versus the Chicago Bulls.

Josh Primo, the 2021 No. 12 overall pick, was waived by the organization in just the beginning of his second year.
“It is our hope that, in the long run, this decision will serve the best interest of both the organization and Joshua,” said Spurs CEO R.C. Buford in a statement.
Head coach Gregg Popovich and the team denied further comment on the release ahead of their Friday matchup against the Chicago Bulls.
Primo, a 19-year-old guard out of Alabama, played 50 games (16 starts) in his rookie season and averaged 5.8 points per game, 2.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists on a 37.4/30.7/74.6 shooting split in 19.3 minutes.
In four games this season, Primo upped his per-game numbers to 7.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds on a 34.6/25.0/77.8 shooting split.
College stats
In his freshman season, Primo was the youngest player in college basketball. He averaged 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and was named to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Freshman Team.

Primo missed three games with a left medial collateral ligament sprain. On April 21, 2021, he declared for the 2021 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility.
However on June 30, Primo announced he would remain in the draft due to a strong performance at the NBA combine.
Primo was selected with the 12th pick in the 2021 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. Primo was later included in the 2021 NBA Summer League roster of the Spurs.[11] On August 11, 2021, the San Antonio Spurs announced that they had signed Primo.
