Josh Jackson Retirement
The decision comes just two years into a three-year contract extension amidst much speculation over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs’ official squad for 2023. Jackson now officially ruling himself out as he chooses to step away from the squad and focus on life after footy with his family.
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs Captain Josh Jackson has today announced that he will retire from professional rugby league.
Whilst he won’t join the team under Ciraldo’s care in 2023, he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and class both on and off the football field.
“Josh has long been at the heart of the Bulldogs,” said Bulldogs Rugby League Football Club Chairman John Khoury.
“He has led this great Club with pride. He has bled blue and white, and played for his state and for his country.
“We know this decision has not been an easy one and while it is a sad day, there is no doubt that despite not lacing up the boots and running out in 2023, he will continue to inspire the Bulldogs team and our community for many more years to come.
“We cannot thank him enough for everything he has done for our Club, but now it is time to reflect on and celebrate his wonderful career.”

According to Zerotackle.com, Canterbury Bulldogs captain Josh Jackson has thrown his support behind Bulldogs’ junior Jake Averillo, declaring the speedster is the club’s long-term fullback.

Despite starting the season at halfback, Averillo has emerged as a real asset for Canterbury in the number one jersey, winning both matches since interim coach Mick Potter shifted the 21-year-old into the custodian role.
Ever since he made his early 2020 NRL debut in front of a crowd-less ANZ Stadium, the youngster has started in every single backline position except for fullback – until Round 14 this year, that is.
Slotting in after the dropping of Matt Dufty to NSW Cup, Averillo has ran for 236 metres, broken four tackles and scored four tries across his two games in the new role, and skipper Josh Jackson has seen enough to know they’re onto a winner.
“Everyone knows his attributes: he’s fast, he’s strong and he can break tackles. You can just tell he’s really enjoying his footy,” Jackson told reporters.
“He’s looked fantastic and I think it looks like there might be a really long-term opportunity for him as the number one for this club” Jackson said in the lead-up to this week’s clash with Cronulla.

After he was drafted 4th by Phoenix, it was reported that Jackson had cancelled his workout with the Boston Celtics, who held the 3rd pick after trading the #1 pick to the Philadelphia 76ers, just as the Celtics management and staff were midway to Sacramento to meet him, something that reportedly angered Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, although Ainge denied that it factored into his decision to not draft Jackson.
On July 7, 2019, the Suns traded Jackson to the Memphis Grizzlies. On September 27, the Grizzlies assigned him to the Memphis Hustle, their NBA G League affiliate, for the start of the season.
Jackson played in 26 games for the Hustle before being called up by the Grizzlies, averaging 20.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game was named Midseason All-NBA G League for the Western Conference.
On December 1, 2020, Jackson signed with his hometown team, the Detroit Pistons.
