At regional level, he has held multiple heavyweight championships, including the WBO Oriental, Africa, and Oceania titles; as well as the PABA, OPBF, and New Zealand titles.
As an amateur, he represented New Zealand at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the super-heavyweight division, and narrowly missed qualification for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Parker turned professional in July 2012 with Duco Events in Auckland, under the tutelage of Sir Bob Jones.
After defeating Andy Ruiz for the vacant WBO title, Parker became the first heavyweight boxer from either New Zealand or the Pacific Islands to win a major world championship.
As of October 2021, he is ranked as the world’s fifth best active heavyweight by The Ring magazine, sixth by BoxRec and ninth best by TBRB.
Vs Joe Joyce
Heavyweight duo Joe Joyce and Joseph Parker go head-to-head in an intriguing clash tonight in Manchester.
A fight between the pair was first announced back in April on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s emphatic stoppage win over Dillian Whyte, with the bout then scheduled to take place over the summer.
With Parker signing for Sky Sports and BOXXER the fight was initially delayed, with Joyce instead stopping Christian Hammer with ease, before the September date was finally announced last month.
Joyce and Parker, ranked one and two by the WBO respectively, will fight for the interim WBO heavyweight title following a joint request by Queensberry Promotions and BOXXER.
The WBO belt is currently held by Oleksandr Usyk following his second-successive victory over Anthony Joshua. Usyk had been expected to fight Tyson Fury next, but that is now in doubt with the Gypsy King in talks to take on Joshua in December.
If Joyce wins, he will move one step closer to a world title shot – while he will also be promoted to the outright champion should the WBO belt eventually be vacated.
Parker, on the other hand, will have to beat Joyce twice to move into that position, with a rematch clause in place should ‘The Juggernaut’ lose.
Joseph Parker next fight
Heavyweight Joseph Parker next fight vowed to stop the Joe Joyce “hype train” in its tracks when they meet on Saturday.
The 30-year-old New Zealander is the underdog despite being a former world champion and says he is confident of a quick victory against the Briton, 37.
The pair will fight in Manchester for the WBO interim heavyweight title, with the winner in prime position to challenge champion Oleksandr Usyk.
“I see a lump, a big man,” Parker said at a media conference on Thursday.
“A man that’s confident, a man’s that ready, but a man who is going to be stopped in his tracks. Hype train.”
Joyce, who is unbeaten in his professional career and has 13 knockouts in 14 fights, did not respond to Parker’s taunts.
“This big lump is going to be coming at you on Saturday night,” he said.
Parker’s trainer Andy Lee explained why he expected an easy night for his fighter.
“Any fight can be an easy fight,” he said. “Joseph knows how to make this an easy fight, I know what he has to do.
“Parker is leagues apart. Joyce has a big engine, is strong, punches hard himself. We know what we’re up against. This is elite. Joe’s reaching new levels every time.
“Forget what you saw from Parker before, you’ve only seen glimpses.”
Parker, who trains with WBC champion Tyson Fury, lost his WBO world title to Anthony Joshua in their unification fight in 2018.
The Kiwi lost his next bout to another British fighter, Dillian Whyte, but then went on a six-fight winning streak.
As of 2022, the net worth of Dennis Parker is estimated to be $5 million.
