AFL champion Joel Selwood’s first move post-footy career has been revealed, with the four-time premiership Cat joining the Melbourne Storm.

As first reported by the Herald Sun, Selwood has joined the Storm in a part-time role as a leadership coach, turning down a host of rival organisations keen for his signature.

The 34-year-old led Geelong for 11 seasons, winning his first premiership as captain in his final game against Sydney.

He’s widely respected as one of the best on-field leaders across the Australian sporting landscape after 355 games at AFL level.

Selwood said he was excited to join an organization with the reputation of the Storm.

“I’m really excited to be joining Storm. I’ve been watching them and been in envy of what the club has been able to achieve for a long time,” Selwood said.

The Storm’s captain or co-captains for 2023 are yet to be appointed, and football manager Frank Ponissi said feedback from those around Selwood drove the appointment.

“Joel is an impressive person and has shown he has outstanding leadership qualities as Captain of the Cats over a long period of time,” Ponissi said.

Geelong Cats champion Joel Selwood appears destined to be a success in the AFL’s coaching ranks, which makes his first move in retirement all the more shocking.

Selwood, who bowed out of the game after captaining his beloved Cats to the AFL premiership, has signed up as a leadership coach for the Melbourne Storm.

He also shared some brilliant moments after the match, including sharing a sweet photo with an Auskicker receiving his medal and bringing water boy Sam Moorfoot out of the crowd to celebrate with the team.

But he’ll take his experience cross-code to the NRL powerhouse Storm.

The Storm are no strangers to delving into the AFL knowledge pool in the heart of Aussie rules country, having previously had Collingwood premiership captain Nick Maxwell in a similar role for the past six years.

Selwood had signed up for the part-time role to help shape the leaders at the club including the likes of Christian Welch, Cameron Munster and Ryan Papenhuyzen.

New role

Selwood is regarded as one of the greatest AFL captains in history, leading Geelong for a record 245 games as skipper.

He finished his career on the ultimate high, finally securing his first flag as captain and the fourth of his career in the 81-point demolition of Sydney.

It is a massive coup for the Storm, who beat out a long list of AFL clubs chasing his services.

The 34-year-old, who retired this year after leading the Cats to the AFL premiership, has agreed to a part-time role helping the Storm’s senior and emerging leaders.

“I’m really excited to be joining Storm. I’ve been watching them and been in envy of what the club has been able to achieve for a long time,” Selwood said.

“I was impressed with the presentation Frank  and Craig  made and have already been welcomed at the club when I visited AAMI Park earlier this week. I can’t wait to meet the rest of the playing group and getting into the season.”
