Embiid was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, to military officer Thomas Embiid and his wife, Christine. He played volleyball and soccer in childhood and originally planned to play professional volleyball in Europe but started playing basketball at age 15, modeling his game after NBA Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon.

Embiid was discovered at a basketball camp by Luc Mbah a Moute, a fellow native of Yaoundé and an NBA player.

With Mbah a Moute as his mentor, Embiid moved to the United States at age 16 to devote himself to becoming a professional basketball player.

Embiid enrolled at Montverde Academy, Mbah a Moute’s alma mater, but transferred after his first year due to a lack of playing time.

He then attended The Rock School, a Christian academy, in Gainesville, Florida.

As a senior, he led their team to a 33–4 record and state championship, averaging 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.

Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid has rewrote the franchise record books, breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s single-game points record in a 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night.

Embiid dropped a career-high 70 points, which was done just 13 times before the big man achieved the feat. He became the ninth player to do so.

Chamberlain still holds the record for most in a single game with 100, but his Philadelphia career-high was 68 points. Embiid’s left-handed transition layup late in the fourth quarter gave him the record. Wells Fargo Center erupted in applause as 76ers fans knew what was at stake when the ball hit off the glass.

Embiid finished the game 24-of-41 from the field, which is an unprecedented number of shots, but when you’re shooting at a 58.5% clip, no one on the Sixers is going to be mad about it.

He was also making it to the free throw line a ton, making 21 of his 23 chances there.

Embiid was also raking in rebounds, collecting 18 on the night to become the first ever player in league history to do so. He also added five assists to his total.

Embiid’s previous career-high was a 59-point performance against the Utah Jazz last November.

This once-in-a-lifetime game for Embiid came on a night where Spurs rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama was highlighted because it was the first time he was facing Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP.

Embiid clearly didn’t care for all the talk and buzz surrounding Wembanyama, as he was clearly the star of the show, but “Wemby” certainly held his own in the hostile environment, dropping 33 points of his own as the duo combined for over 100 points on the night.

He made striking field goals – 24 out of 41, and exceptionally tallied 21 out of 23 free throws. It was a memorable moment when Embiid surpassed Wilt Chamberlain’s score of 68, a hike that hadn’t been experienced since December 1967.

As a six-time All-Star and the defense MVP, Embiid consistently impressed with 30-point scores in 21 consecutive matches, contributing to the team’s six-game winning streak.

In the 29-minute face-up between the 7-footers, rookie Victor Wembanyama managed 33 points and seven rebounds, but his Spurs still lagged in the game with a 5-19 road record.

Taking the lead by 14 points, Embiid returned to the court with the league’s top score in sight. Philadelphia kept Embiid in possession until he equaled his 59-point career high, and then some.

Before Embiid’s feat, the highest score this NBA season was 64 points by Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Even before the game started, all eyes were on the contest between Embiid and Wembanyama. Intense anticipation was in the air as fans gathered to glimpse Spurs’ prodigy Wembanyama.
