NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted early Sunday morning that the 49ers & quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo are both open to his return next season.

Represented by Don Yee, Garoppolo was considered one of the better quarterback prospects for the 2014 NFL Draft.

The New England Patriots drafted him in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, with the 62nd pick overall.

He was the first player from the Football Championship Subdivision drafted in 2014, and the highest-drafted quarterback the Patriots had selected since Drew Bledsoe was picked first overall in 1993.

Garoppolo and the Patriots signed a four-year contract worth $3,483,898 ($1,103,744 guaranteed) with an $853,744 signing bonus.

The #49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo are both open to his return next season under the right circumstances, sources say. A scenario that seemed unfathomable a few months ago.

The quarterback has piloted the 49ers to a 7-4 record and they have a real shot at winning the NFC West. If the playoffs began today, they would hold the third seed and host a playoff game.

Though they mortaged a lot of capital to move up and draft Lance, it seems like Garoppolo has potentially played his way back into the job. At the very worst, he’s probably made a lot of teams more interested in him.

As for the 49ers, it will be a bit awkward if they’re forced to choose between the two. Lance is the second-year quarterback they traded up to number two overall to get, but they know Garoppolo can win them games.

Having to potentially choose between two good quarterbacks isn’t exactly a huge problem. Many teams would be envious of that choice.

The relationship between two-time Super Bowl winner Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers may not be ending any time soon.

The quarterback lost his starting job to second-year player Trey Lance this season after taking the team to the NFC Championship Game.

Knee injury

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins early in the first quarter with an ankle injury, and was subsequently ruled out.

Early in the first quarter, Garoppolo appeared to roll his ankle while being sacked by Miami linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Jerome Baker. He limped off the field and went to the medical tent, then was quickly carted off to the locker room.

Backup Brock Purdy took over after Garoppolo was carted off, and helped lead the Niners to a 10-7 advantage over the Dolphins before the end of the first quarter.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan probably didn’t think he’d have to play Purdy this season except for maybe a blowout. He probably also didn’t think Garoppolo would be starting as much as he has.

The Niners’ season began with Trey Lance, their quarterback of the future, sustaining a season-ending injury in Week 1. Jimmy G, who was supposed to spend the entire season as Lance’s backup, took over from then on.

If Garoppolo is destined to miss time with this injury, the Niners will be forced to start yet another QB under center, their third of the year.
