Jerrell Powe, 35, remained jailed Monday in the Jackson suburb of Ridgeland with no bail set. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer to speak for him.
Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers told WLBT-TV that Powe and another person, 35-year-old Gavin Bates of Roseville, California, were arrested Jan. 12 at a bank in the city.
Investigators said the victim was part of Powe’s investment in a marijuana-growing operation. Police said Powe is accused of forcing the man to go to the Chase Bank in Ridgeland to return the money he and others had invested in that operation.
“It probably has something to do with self-help, but you can’t break the law and engage in kidnapping to collect a debt,” said Ridgeland prosecutor Boty McDonald.
