Jaylen Watson is a WR from River Rouge in Detroit, MI.

The River Rouge varsity football team won Friday’s away non-conference game against St. Mary’s Prep (Orchard Lake, MI) by a score of 28-0.

River Rouge and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s are two programs looking to maintain their championship identities after seeing their legendary coaches move on and seeing longtime assistants take the top role.

It looked like River Rouge has been making much quicker progress, based on the Panthers’ 28-0 whitewashing of St. Mary’s on Friday night in Orchard Lake.

With Eric Pettway replacing Corey Parker, now the cornerbacks coach at Toledo, the Panthers (3-0) scored on three consecutive first-half drives to grab a 20-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Eaglets (1-3), with Jermaine Gonzalez succeeding the retired George Porritt, struggled mightily on offense. St. Mary’s went minus-3 yards across their four possessions and didn’t get a first down until midway through the third quarter.

Mom

On the second day of the Chiefs’ annual three-day rookie minicamp in Kansas City, a seventh-round draft selection shared a Mother’s Day lesson:

Don’t work for your mom.

Don’t get cornerback Jaylen Watson wrong. He loves his mother. She an inspiration, a fountain of encouragement for all of his dreams.

“I wanted to be an actor, a rapper, whatever, she was always there to support me,” Watson said. “She’s like my super-woman.”

She also was there for her son when his college football path took an unexpected turn.

The first stop for Watson, from his Augusta, Georgia home, was Ventura College, a two-year school in California. He excelled there and signed with USC.

But an academic obstacle forced a detour, and Watson returned home.

With limited options, the son was added to Mom’s work payroll at $7.25 an hour, and, well …

“I love her to death, but it was terrible,” Watson said. “You get no breaks from your mom. You go to work, you’re with your mom. You go home, your with your mom. You can’t even talk about work.

“But I still love her.”

The Kansas City Chiefs got assistance from some unlikely heroes in their 27-24 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night, and they certainly needed it. Rookie cornerback Jaylen Watson, despite the odds working against him, was one of them.

Watson, who spent some time in coverage against Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams and didn’t put out tremendous tape in those situations, finished the contest with four tackles and some otherwise respectable reps in coverage.

With the game tied in the fourth quarter, Watson jumped a Justin Herbert pass, picked it off and took it 99 yards back the other way for a touchdown. After the game, Watson recalled how his first career takeaway and touchdown unfolded.

Watson’s story is far from normal. Three years ago, he ended up de-committing from USC and wound up back in Georgia where he worked under his mother’s supervision at a local Wendy’s restaurant. After that, he got a second chance in the college football world and joined forces with Washington State.

After a pair of seasons as a Cougar, he entered this year’s draft with an impressive athletic profile but some major question marks about his professional prospects.

Falling to the 243rd overall selection would spell doom for most players, but not Watson.

He mentioned his resiliency as something that shines through in how he plays now that he’s in the NFL.
