McClean was born and brought up in Derry and played for the Northern Ireland national under-21 football team, but declined a call-up to the senior squad because he wanted to play for the Republic of Ireland.

In February 2012, McClean received international clearance from FIFA which made him eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland, making his debut against the Czech Republic in the same month.

He has since represented the nation at UEFA Euro 2012 and UEFA Euro 2016.

McClean was part of the Northern Ireland team that won the 2008 Milk Cup and scored in the opening game in a 3–1 win against the US. He has also represented Northern Ireland seven times at Under 21 level.

On 26 July 2011 he was called up to the Northern Ireland senior squad for the match against the Faroe Islands on 10 August 2011.

McClean decided to wait for selection by the Republic of Ireland and therefore pulled out of the Northern Ireland squad.

In January 2012 he again confirmed he would not be reconsidering his decision although Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill had been in contact with him.

McClean’s success in the Premier League saw increasing calls for Giovanni Trapattoni to select him for the Republic of Ireland, with Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill saying after McClean’s winning goal at Stoke: “I think he’s more than capable of going to Euro 2012 … Hopefully he’s making such an impact he’ll be watched by someone in the Ireland camp, even if it’s not Trapattoni.

However, he was not included in the squad for the match against the Czech Republic which was announced the next day, though he was added to the squad on 20 February after success against Arsenal in the FA Cup Fifth Round Proper.

McClean made his international debut on 29 February 2012, coming on in the 78th minute for Aiden McGeady in a friendly against the Czech Republic at the Aviva Stadium.

On 7 May 2012, manager Giovanni Trapattoni confirmed that McClean was part of the Irish UEFA Euro 2012 squad.

McClean played with Trojans, Institute, his hometown club Derry City, and Sunderland before moving to Wigan Athletic in August 2013.

He spent two seasons at Wigan, claiming their player of the year award in the latter, and then returned to the Premier League by joining West Bromwich Albion in June 2015.

McClean spent three season with the Baggies before joining Stoke City in July 2018. McClean re-signed for Wigan Athletic in August 2021.

Republic of Ireland football star James McClean celebrated his latest Premiership goal with West Bromwich Albion by flashing a tattoo of his home city’s iconic Free Derry Corner.

The Derry footballer (28) pulled up the leg of his shorts on Tuesday night to show the tattooed image on his thigh.

Tuesday night however proved an evening of mixed fortunes the Derry-born player.

While he scored for his club, it was not enough to secure victory againstWest Ham who scored a late winner.

McClean later returned to his Midlands home to find it had been burgled and ransacked.

While the star’s decision to flash his tattoo provoked some reaction on social media, most of the responses were positive.

One supporter on Facebook posted:“What a great tattoo” while another posted “A true Irishman.”

McClean had the image tattooed on his leg in 2014 along with the words of Phil Coulter’s anthem, “In my memories, I will always see, the town that I have loved so well.”

Quoting the words of writer, Enid Algerine Bagnold, below the Free Derry Corner image, he added: “A father is always making his baby into a little woman. And when she is a woman he turns her back again.”

Yesterday Irish international James McClean shut down his Twitter account in response to death threats and what he described as “dog’s abuse” from Northern Ireland fans. He wasn’t kidding.

Born in Derry, the 23-year-old Irish international had represented Northern Ireland in his youth, a fact which has not been forgotten by certain sections of Northern Ireland fans, particularly after his Euro 2012 call-up earlier this week.

Having received constant abuse from online trolls following Monday’s squad announcement, McClean defiantly shot back a tweet at his critics, writing: “just worry about watchin ur own country at the euros… oh wait”.

This remark riled up his detractors to such an extent that the midfielder shut down his account last night.

After the news broke, the 31-year-old was sent messages on social media that read ‘McClean has got corona… I hope he f**king dies!’
