Justin James Watt is an American football defensive end for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL).

He played college football at Central Michigan and Wisconsin and was drafted by the Houston Texans in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Considered to be one of the greatest defensive linemen of all time, Watt received the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award three times in his first five seasons.

Although primarily a defensive end, he occasionally shifts to defensive tackle in some situations.

Is J.J Watt retiring 

JJ Watt, considered one of the NFL’s greatest ever defensive players, has announced he will retire at the end of the current season.

The Arizona Cardinals defensive end, 33, was voted NFL defensive player of the year three times.

Watt spent a decade with the Houston Texans before joining Arizona in 2021.

“My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude. It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure,” Watt wrote on Twitter.

Watt has spent the last two seasons with the Cardinals, after representing the Houston Texans between 2011 and 2020.

He added that Sunday’s defeat by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was both his baby son Koa’s first NFL game, and his own “last ever” home game.

Having failed to make the postseason, the Cardinals have two regular season games left, at Atlanta and San Francisco.

As well as being defensive player of the year in 2012, 2014 and 2015, Watt was the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2017.

He was also named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year in 2017 for helping to raise $37m (£30.7m) in relief funds for people affected by the devastation brought by Hurricane Harvey in Houston.

Once upon a time, J.J. Watt was on the fast track to becoming the most dominant defensive player in NFL history. 

Instead, his life took a left turn and he upgraded – he’ll now head into retirement in a few weeks as one of the very best people in NFL history.

Watt came out of nowhere – via Central Michigan and Wisconsin, anyway – and Houston Texans fans were so excited he was their first-round pick in the vaunted 2011 draft that they booed his selection.

But Watt won them over by the end of his rookie season, when the Texans qualified for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and won their inaugural postseason game – Watt’s 29-yard pick-six against the Cincinnati Bengals proving the decisive score in a 31-10 wild-card victory.

That was hardly predictive of what would come next.

Over the following four seasons, Watt burst onto the national radar, winning the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award three times – a feat matched only by Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and eventual Hall of Famer Aaron Donald – while earning first-team All-Pro honors in all four campaigns.

It took Watt 82 games to record 75 sacks, a benchmark only the legendary Reggie White reached faster. And since sacks became an official statistic in 1982, Watt is the only player to record at least 20 in a season multiple times.

On March 1, 2021, Watt signed a two-year, $28 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals, with $23 million guaranteed.

Although #99 was retired by the Cardinals in honor of Marshall Goldberg, Goldberg’s daughter Ellen Goldberg gave Watt permission to wear it.

In Week 7 against his former team, Watt suffered a shoulder injury in the 2nd quarter, but remained in the game.

On October 27, it was revealed Watt would need season-ending shoulder surgery. He was placed on injured reserve on November 6, 2021.

He was activated on January 17, 2022, for the Cardinals’ Wild Card Round loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Despite experiencing atrial fibrillation on September 28, 2022, and having his heart shocked back in rhythm the next day, Watt committed to play in Week 4.

Watt announced on December 27 that he will retire at the end of the season.
