Born in Northampton, Toney began his career at his hometown club Northampton Town. He made his first-team debut on 13 November 2012, in a 3–3 draw in the FA Cup first round away to Bradford City; he came on at the end of regulation time in place of Lewis Wilson as his team eventually lost 4–2 in a penalty shoot-out.
At 16 years old he became the youngest first-team player in the club’s history.
The following day, he scored four goals in the FA Youth Cup, in a 5–0 win over York City.
His only other appearance in a matchday squad that season was on 17 November, remaining unused in a 3–1 League Two win at home to Wycombe Wanderers.
Toney made his first start on 28 September 2013 in a goalless home draw against Morecambe, making way for Ben Tozer after 74 minutes.

Toney, 26, is widely expected to be in England’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar, which starts a fortnight today.
Astonishingly, despite the ongoing investigation, he was picked for Three Lions duty during recent Nations League matches — but did not play.
The allegations are believed to relate solely to the period when Toney was at one of his previous clubs. A source said: “Ivan is aware of the investigation. He is concerned but is adamant that he has done nothing wrong.
“The FA is duty-bound to act fully on allegations they receive. But it is obviously a highly sensitive matter for the FA as he is a potential candidate for the England World Cup squad.”
No charges have been brought by FA chiefs against the player.
There is no suggestion of any criminal activity by Toney — who also previously played for Newcastle United — or that he attempted to fix the outcome of any match.
However, under FA rules, all professional men and top women players face a worldwide ban on all football betting.
The laws are so strict they include gambling on transfers, manager jobs and team selection and apply to players and managers, match officials and club staff.
Ivan toney Arsenal tweet
Ivan Toney has escalated his war of words with Arsenal’s players by calling their mockery of him on social media cringeworthy.
Toney became an unpopular figure at Arsenal after tweeting “Nice kick about with the boys” after Brentford’s 2-0 win against them at the start of last season.
The tweet was used as motivation by Mikel Arteta when Brentford visited the Emirates Stadium last February and it came up again when the sides met at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday.
Arsenal fans celebrated their team’s 3-0 win by aiming derisive chants at Toney, who has been called up by England for the first time, and the mockery continued after the game.
Gabriel Magalhães, the Arsenal centre-back, took aim at the striker by tweeting: “Nice kick about with the boys”.
Toney suggested it could be time for Arsenal to come up with some new material, pointing out that Alexandre Lacazette, who has since left for Lyon, tweeted the same joke after Arsenal beat Brentford in February.
“I think once was funny, second time a bit cringey but I bit my tongue,” he said. “I wanted to reply, I wanted to nibble but fair play to them. They are a different Arsenal side to what we played before and they played very well.”
Toney hopes to make his England debut in the Nations League against Italy in Milan on Friday. The 26‑year‑old has had an impressive rise since failing to make the grade at Newcastle and moving to Peterborough in 2018.
