Born in Northampton, Toney began his career at his hometown club Northampton Town.
He made his first-team debut on 13 November 2012, in a 3–3 draw in the FA Cup first round away to Bradford City; he came on at the end of regulation time in place of Lewis Wilson as his team eventually lost 4–2 in a penalty shoot-out.
At 16 years old he became the youngest first-team player in the club’s history.
The following day, he scored four goals in the FA Youth Cup, in a 5–0 win over York City.
His only other appearance in a matchday squad that season was on 17 November, remaining unused in a 3–1 League Two win at home to Wycombe Wanderers.

Ivan Toney has played down any suggestions of a rift with Gareth Southgate by insisting his focus remains on Brentford after leaving Erling Haaland and Manchester City stunned.
The striker was omitted from Southgate’s England squad – which was announce on Thursday – for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, with Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson instead going on the plane.
Two days later and Toney provided the perfect response to that disappointment, by putting in a man of the match performance to help the Bees defeat City.
He scored both of his side’s goals in their stunning 2-1 win over the reigning champions and even spurned a brilliant chance to claim a hat-trick.
His first goal came after just 16 minutes when he reacted first to head past Ederson and put the Bees in front.
City hit back through Phil Foden’s stunning effort, with Brentford put under heavy pressure for most of the Premier League clash.
But after Yoane Wissa broke away with the ball from a City corner, Toney produced a first-time finish to win the game for the visitors deep into added time.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been charged over 232 alleged breaches of betting rules between February 2017 and January 2021, the Football Association has announced.
-Toney, who was not included in England’s 26-man World Cup squad, had previously revealed he had been assisting the FA with its enquiries amid allegations he gambled on matches.
After a report in the Daily Mail claimed he had been the subject of an FA investigation, he tweeted on November 5: “I’m aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today.
“I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion.
“I am a proud Englishman and it has always been my childhood dream to play for my country at a World Cup finals.”
The 26-year-old has until Thursday, November 24 to respond to the charges.
The FA said on Wednesday: “Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA’s betting rules.
