The ICC conceived the idea of the Champions Trophy – a short cricket tournament to raise funds for the development of the game in non-test playing countries, with the first tournaments being held in Bangladesh and Kenya.
Due to its massive commercial success, the tournament has been held in nations like India and England as a revenue generator for the ICC, and the number of teams has been reduced to eight.
The tournament, later dubbed as the mini-World Cup as it involved all of the full members of the ICC, was planned as a knock-out tournament so that it was short and did not reduce the value and importance of the World Cup.
However, from 2002, the tournament has had a round-robin format, followed by a few knockout games but the tournament still takes places over a short period of time – about two weeks.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025 host
The PCB ( Pakistan Cricket Board ) was awarded hosting rights for the event last week, the first ICC global event it has been allotted after the 1996 World Cup (it lost the co-hosting rights for the 2011 World Cup due to security concerns).
In the wake of a couple of recent pullouts from bilateral tours to the country, by New Zealand and then England, as well as remarks by Anurag Thakur, the Indian sports minister, questions have inevitably cropped up about that particular event.
Asked whether the ICC was confident that teams would travel to Pakistan, the governing body’s chairman, Greg Barclay, said, “From what we can see, absolutely.
There has been international cricket in Pakistan for a few years, all of it with the exception of what happened in the last few weeks.
“We wouldn’t have awarded the event if we didn’t think Pakistan was capable of hosting it. We think it is an exciting opportunity for them to be able to host a world event for the first time in a long time.
I’m sure, as with all countries, they will put together appropriate security plans to deliver the event. We’re comfortable and confident it will go ahead.”
India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan is a “challenging” issue for the International Cricket Council but the world governing body said it is confident all teams will travel to the country for the tournament.
International sides have largely steered clear of Pakistan since an attack by Islamist militants on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009 that killed six policemen and two civilians.
The 50-over tournament will be the first ICC event hosted by Pakistan since it shared the 1996 World Cup with India and Sri Lanka and last week’s announcement came as a big boost after England and New Zealand pulled out of tours there in September.
PCB Chairman said It’s a matter of great pride and delight that Pakistan will be hosting ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This great news will surely excite millions of Pakistani fans, expats, and world fans to see great teams and players in action and will allow the world to sample our hospitality.
