Former heavyweight boxer Goran Gogic was charged by the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday with trafficking 22 tons of cocaine worth over $1 billion.
The 43-year-old Montenegrin was arrested on Sunday night at Miami International Airport while trying to board a flight to Zurich. He was previously indicted by a grand jury in New York.
Gogic was charged with three counts of violating the federal Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act, plus one count of conspiracy. Each of the three counts has a mandatory minimum 10-year prison term with a possible life sentence.
The charges date back to 2019, when 22 tons of cocaine from three commercial cargo ships were seized while docked at Philadelphia’s Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.

But a decade after his retirement on November 1, the 43-year-old became a tabloid sensation as the US Department of Justice charged him for trafficking 22 tons of cocaine worth over $1 billion.
The charges date back to 2019 when 22 tons of cocaine were found at Philadelphia’s Packer Avenue Marine Terminal. The court papers show that the former heavyweight boxer oversaw the scheme’s logistics and coordinated with the crew members.
And among the crew members, eight have pleaded guilty to their charges. Gogic involved Colombian traffickers and European dockworkers in making the scheme successful.

According to a press release from the United States Department of Justice, Gogic faces charges of “maritime narcotrafficking.” Simply put, according to the DOJ Gogic is alleged to have used commercial container ships to transport over $1 billion worth of cocaine from Columbia to Europe, via the United States.
According to the DOJ, over 20 tons — yes 20 tons — of cocaine were seized between May of 2018 and July of 2019.
For example, in February of 2019 1,437 kilograms of cocaine were seized from the MSC Carlotta at the Port of New York and New Jersey.
In June of 2019, approximately 17,956 kilograms — 39,586 pounds — was seized from the MSC Gayane at the Port of Philadelphia. This seizure was one of the largest in United States history.
The Justice Department accused Goran Gogic of managing the logistics of cocaine shipments initiated from South America. These shipments, the prosecutors allege, were headed to Europe via a few ports in the United States.
According to a USA Today report, authorities intercepted three shipments at the Philadelphia Port on June 19, 2019, which were carrying more than 17,956 kilogrammes of cocaine.
