Along with his brother Nathan, Ablett would regularly attend his father’s training sessions and weekly games.
Geelong players regarded them as “barefooted pests in the rooms”, and would often engage in kick-to-kick sessions with both of the boys.
He attended Christian College Geelong during his schooling years.
Ablett played junior football with the Modewarre Football Club until he was chosen to play for the Geelong Falcons in the under–18 TAC Cup competition for the 2001 season.
Ablett’s selection was met with controversy, as some families of other prospective junior players felt Ablett was chosen on the basis of his famous family heritage rather than footballing merit.
However, the Falcons’ football manager Mick Turner repeatedly dismissed speculation.
Son disease
Jordan Ablett has further opened up about her son Levi’s rare degenerative illness, revealing he’s never spoken a word and is vulnerable to aspirating.
Levi, the three-year-old son of Jordan and now-retired Geelong superstar Gary Ablett, has captured the hearts of many Australians over recent years, particularly in 2020 after his parents publicly spoke about his condition in the wake of AFL clubs having to relocate to hubs to keep the season alive.
Jordan last year tragically revealed Levi’s condition was life-threatening, adding there was a “very short life expectancy”.
Speaking to the Herald Sun on Friday, Jordan said it’s highly likely Levi will never talk, but added “his life has been a constant message”.
She said when Levi is upset, she had to “guess what the problem is”.
“It’s really difficult from a practical point of view but also really difficult just being his mum and not being able to hear his voice or know what he needs,” Jordan told the Herald Sun.
Jordan said there was a “wide team” that monitored Levi’s health, adding her family was in “constant communication” with the Royal Children’s Hospital.
She said her and the family had to be “extra vigilant” because Levi is “a magnet to any infections within proximity to him”.
Gary Ablett Jr baby
Jordan and Gary Ablett on Thursday announced an exciting addition to their family following the birth of Grace Honour Ablett on Wednesday.
The parents shared the same image to their social media accounts of Gary holding his new baby daughter in the hospital.
“We are overjoyed to share with you all that our precious boy, Levi, has become a big brother to his very own little sister; Grace,” their captions read.
“Thank you God for sending this little angel—our beautiful daughter—into our family.”
Grace’s arrival means son Levi, 2, now has a baby sister — and Cats can look forward to a possible AFLW signing in years to come.
Gary Ablett is regarded as one of the best AFL players of the modern era, finishing his career with 357 games, 445 goals, two premierships, two Brownlow Medals, eight All-Australians, six club best and fairests and five AFLPA MVP awards.
It was only a couple of days ago he was snapped having a kick of the footy with his dad, Gary Sr, and Cats captain Joel Selwood.
Levi captured the hearts of many Australians last year after his parents revealed his condition to the public amid Geelong and other clubs being asked to relocate to hubs to keep the AFL season alive.

Counting Jimmy and Nadia Bartel among guests at their nuptials in Victoria, the pair tied the knot at a private estate on Friday.
The ceremony, to which 23-year-old Jordan donned an unusual backless gown, came just over two years since the pair stepped out together.
Having already graced the contents of Jordan’s Instagram feed, Gary beamed as he presented his then girlfriend on the red carpet at the Brownlow Medal in 2013.
Jordan, who at the time worked as a stylist, stunned in a baby pink gown. The pair hadn’t yet spoken of their relationship, with the beauty instead opting to discuss fashion over romance.
‘I only ever want to be associated with elegance or class…anything else, no thank you,’ she told The Herald Sun.
Little is known of Jordan’s career other than her affiliation with The Gloss Bar, an online beauty company.
The pair have in the past been seen visiting children’s hospitals to spend time with young patients.
