The former Real Madrid midfielder, 33, and professional partner Joseph Bramlett started with a seven-under-par 65 on the Spyglass Hill course.

A highlight of the retired Wales football captain’s round was a recovery shot off a path to save par on the second hole.

“It was a great shot,” said Bale, who retired from football on 9 January.

Gareth Bale announced just weeks after retirement from football that he would be starring in a PGA Tour event and his tee times have now been confirmed ahead of his highly-anticipated appearance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Former Wales captain Bale will be one of 156 amateurs competing alongside professionals in the tournament, with the field including US Open champion Matt Fizpatrick and three-time major winner Jordan Spieth.

Bale is a well-known golf nut and damaged his reputation with Real Madrid fans when he was famously pictured holding the banner ‘Wales. Golf Madrid. In that Order.’ while on Wales duty in 2019.

But the five-time Champions League winner is already making the most of his time away from football as he heads to California to compete on the iconic Pebble Beach links.

And the 33-year-old has been paired with American Joseph Bramlett for the unique event, which is played across three courses. Bale will tee off in a group alongside Bramlett, Jerry Lang and the Yahoo founder’s pro partner David Lingmerth at 4:30pm at Spyglass Hill on Thursday February 2.

He will take on the Monterey Peninsula course on Friday from 6:09pm before visiting Pebble Beach for his 5:14pm tee time on the third day. The Pro-Am part of the tournament is determined by the best scores of the professionals and amateurs on each hole and Bale will be playing alongside his pro Bramlett with a 2 handicap.

Gareth Bale pga debut

Gareth Bale is making a dramatic PGA Tour debut – just 23 days after quitting football.

The Wales and Real Madrid legend, 33, recovered from the bunker to par the first hole of the Pebble Beach pro-am.

Smiling Bale looked a world away from the stressful injuries and World Cup disappointment that marred his final months in the beautiful game.

Wales exited Qatar at the group stage and he barely played for his last club Los Angeles FC amid fitness concerns.

Now, though, the two-handicapper is looking relaxed as he takes on world class golfers in the USA.

The Pebble Beach event is held on three separate courses – starting on Thursday at Spyglass Hill.

And Bale shared a joke as he walked out to cheers before going through practice swings in a manner suggesting he was playing for fun.

But the ex-Tottenham attacker also proved he has the focus of an elite sportsman as he kept his cool after getting into trouble on the opening hole.

Bale not only got out of a bunker in style, he even had a decent shot at a birdie that he sent inches by.

Then, taking just a couple of seconds to compose himself, he tapped in for par as if he was a seasoned pro.

Pebble Beach

Gareth Bale impressed with his golfing skill during the opening round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

Facing a shot off the greenside cart path, Bale pulled his wedge out to try and land the ball softly near the cup.

He bounced the ball off the edge of the pavement – sending the ball flying over most of the rough.

Luckily for the former Wales international footballer, the ball checked up on the collar of the green and then softly rolled and settled for a short putt.

Meanwhile, fellow athlete and NFL quarterback Josh Allen began his day with a great drive with his group playing on the nearby Spyglass Hill course.

Bale just recently announced his retirement from professional football, just months after he led Wales in their first World Cup since 1958.

Last week, Bale took part in another Pro-Am just before the Farmers Insurance Open teed off at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

His play drew praise from Spanish golfer Jon Rahm – who said it ‘doesn’t seem fair’ that Bale is ‘so good at football and golf’.

Bale’s love of golf is well known and he is said to have a three-hole golf course at his house but the hobby had been a controversial issue during his soccer career.

It was a source on contempt in particular during his time with Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles.

He posed, while on international duty with Wales, with a banner that read, ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid. In That Order’ – a move which sparked a backlash among supporters of the club.
