Wales iconic star and 5-time Champions League winner Gareth Bale on Monday announced his retirement from International and club football.

Bale began his professional career at Southampton, playing at left-back and earning acclaim as a free kick specialist.

Bale moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2007, for an eventual £7 million fee. During his time at Tottenham, managerial and tactical shifts saw him transform into a more attacking player.

From the 2009–10 season, under the guidance of Harry Redknapp, Bale became an integral part of the team, rising to international attention during the 2010–11 UEFA Champions League.

In 2013, he was also named PFA Young Player of the Year, the FWA Footballer of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season. He was nominated to the PFA Team of the Year three times in a row between 2011 and 2013.

The former Tottenham and Real Madrid forward, who spent last season at LAFC in MLS, was part of Wales’ squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Bale has described the decision to quit international football as “by far the hardest of my career”.

Before hanging up his boots, the former Tottenham and Real Madrid forward had only been with MLS team LAFC for seven months. He had just returned from leading Wales to their first World Cup since 1958.

In his declaration, which has been praised by former players John Hartson and Alan Shearer, the former Wales captain hinted at a potential coaching position in the future as he tries to move on from a playing career at just 33.

Bale wrote on his social media accounts, “After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football. I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me.”

Bale has ended his brilliant career, which included victories in three La Ligas, five Champions Leagues, and three Club World Cups. The iconic striker will leave the game as the nation’s leading scorer and the Welsh player with the most appearances.

Bale was born in Cardiff, Wales, to parents Frank, a school caretaker, and Debbie Bale, an operations manager.

He is the nephew of former Cardiff City footballer Chris Pike. He attended Eglwys Newydd Primary School in Whitchurch.

It was while at this school that he first came to the attention of Southampton at age nine, when he was playing in a six-a-side tournament with his first club, Cardiff Civil Service.

Growing up, his footballing hero was fellow Welshman and Manchester United player Ryan Giggs.

“After long and thoughtful contemplation, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football,” Bale stated in a separate statement posted on social media.
