The Pebble Beach event is held on three separate courses – starting on Thursday at Spyglass Hill.

Bale shared a joke as he walked out to cheers before going through practice swings in a manner suggesting he was playing for fun.

But the ex-Tottenham attacker also proved he has the focus of an elite sportsman as he kept his cool after getting into trouble on the opening hole.

Bale not only got out of a bunker in style, he even had a decent shot at a birdie that he sent inches by.

Then, taking just a couple of seconds to compose himself, he tapped in for par as if he was a seasoned pro.

Gareth Bale impressed with his golfing skill during the opening round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

Facing a shot off the greenside cart path, Bale pulled his wedge out to try and land the ball softly near the cup.

He bounced the ball off the edge of the pavement – sending the ball flying over most of the rough.

Luckily for the former Wales international footballer, the ball checked up on the collar of the green and then softly rolled and settled for a short putt.

Bale just recently announced his retirement from professional football, just months after he led Wales in their first World Cup since 1958.

Last week, Bale took part in another Pro-Am just before the Farmers Insurance Open teed off at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

His play drew praise from Spanish golfer Jon Rahm – who said it ‘doesn’t seem fair’ that Bale is ‘so good at football and golf’.

Bale’s love of golf is well known and he is said to have a three-hole golf course at his house but the hobby had been a controversial issue during his soccer career.

It was a source on contempt in particular during his time with Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles.

He posed, while on international duty with Wales, with a banner that read, ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid. In That Order’ – a move which sparked a backlash among supporters of the club.

Just two weeks after retiring from football, Gareth Bale has confirmed he will be back competing with a ball at his feet next month — albeit a much smaller one.

A well-known golf enthusiast, the Welsh icon is set to tee off at the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California after announcing his involvement in an Instagram post on Monday.

The 33-year-old will compete as part of a 156-player celebrity field alongside a professional group of the same number at the event, which runs from January 30 to February 5.

World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay, three-time major winner Jordan Spieth and 2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick are among the pro-golfers competing for the $9,000,000 professional purse, with Tom Hoge seeking to defend his 2022 title.

Bale will be one of the biggest names at a tournament renowned for featuring the most-famed celebrity golfers, with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, actor Jason Bateman and rapper Macklemore confirmed to feature.

Earlier this month, Bale called time on a stellar 16-year playing career that saw him become a Welsh national hero and one of the most decorated footballers in the modern game.

Having signed for Real Madrid for a then world-record transfer fee in 2013, Bale won five Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles during his time at the club, playing an integral role in much of that success.

Yet his glittering spell in the Spanish capital was soured by a strained relationship with local supporters and media. After helping Wales qualify for the European Championships in 2019, Bale faced a backlash from Real Madrid fans for celebrating with a flag that suggested he preferred representing his country and playing golf ahead of starring for Los Blancos.
