He is widely regarded as one of the greatest wingers of his generation and one of the greatest Welsh players of all time.

Bale began his professional career at Southampton, playing at left-back and earning acclaim as a free kick specialist.

Bale moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2007, for an eventual £7 million fee. During his time at Tottenham, managerial and tactical shifts saw him transform into a more attacking player.

The Wales international became available on a free transfer following his exit from Real Madrid at the end of the season, and he has agreed to make the move across the Atlantic as opposed to pursuing options in Europe.

Gareth Bale has agreed a shock switch to MLS Side LAFC, the player has announced on social media.

He said on international duty early in June that his desire was to secure regular playing time to get match sharp – with his focus being on the World Cup with Wales in Qatar in November and December.

Cardiff were strongly linked with a move for Bale, which would have enabled him to return to his Wales roots, but it appears LAFC have stepped in to sign the 32-year-old.

The club have not officially announced the move, but Bale sent a tweet that said: “See you soon, Los Angeles” while adorned with LAFC merchandise. The club did retweet his tweet.

Wales youth guru Brian Flynn commented that Bale was potentially a future star of the game, comparing his technical ability to that of Ryan Giggs.

On 7 October 2006, Bale became the youngest ever goalscorer for the senior national team, scoring a free kick in a Euro 2008 qualification match against Slovakia.

After a long injury lay-off, he returned and started in the World Cup qualifier against Finland on 10 October 2009.

On 14 October, he played a part in Wales’ final World Cup qualifier by setting up David Vaughan to score the opening goal against Liechtenstein and won the free kick that led to the second, Aaron Ramsey’s first at senior level.
