Vera finished Edgar with a front kick at a time of 3:50 in the third round. ‘The Answer’ also took damage to his face during his only other fight in 2021. Cory Sandhagen knocked him out with a flying knee at the UFC Apex in February.

On Wednesday, the 40-year-old UFC veteran tweeted out that he is recovering from a recent surgery. He added that he is feeling good but has not been allowed to return to training yet.

“Recovering from surgery, feeling good but not allowed to train. I am about to go crazy.”

Frankie Edgar holds a 24-10-1 record in his professional mixed martial arts career. He’s never lost via submission and holds the UFC record for the highest total fight time inside the octagon at seven hours, 41 minutes and 19 seconds.

Marlon Vera scored a huge front kick knockout over Frankie Edgar at UFC 268. The moment created a viral picture of the impact.

Marlon Vera went on The MMA Hour and discussed the win as well as the picture. Believe it or not, the UFC bantamweight was not a fan of the picture.

“It’s a fucked up picture,” UFC fighter Vera said during an appearance on The MMA Hour. “I don’t post it. It’s fucked up. I put it like this — it’s him or me.

I always talk like this, it’s my family that I’ve got to bring the bread home against your family. I’m sorry. Fuck you for that. I’m going to do everything to do for my family, for my loved ones. We’re fighting for that. We’re fighting for a better future, for everything at home.

“But it’s a fucked up picture. I don’t post that picture. Everybody’s tagging me. I don’t think even in the stories, I don’t even want to reply. The guy still has a family, the guy still has a life and that was Saturday night.”

It’s a refreshing approach as many would have put the picture all over their social media after UFC 268. Marlon Vera is all about respect.

Frankie Edgar’s retirement fight at UFC 281 ended violently when Chris Gutierrez knocked him out cold in the first round.

A knee up the middle caught Edgar flush, sending him to the canvas at the 2:01 mark of the opening frame. It was his third knockout loss in his previous four fights, while Gutierrez extended his unbeaten streak to eight fights.

“I love this sport, man,” an emotional Edgar told Joe Rogan afterward. “I didn’t want to go out like that, but this sport’s a b****. I’ve got my family here. That’s all that matters.”

Edgar then broke down in the arms of his teammates before exiting the octagon for the final time. He embraced his wife just outside the cage.

This is the last ride of a legend of MMA. Edgar is a former UFC lightweight champion, who after a storied career competing at the top of three different weight classes, is finally looking to hang up the gloves and wanted to do so at Madison Square Garden.

The surefire Hall of Famer turned 41 in October and recently has fallen on tough times, losing four of his previous five bouts, including three by brutal knockout. But he hopes to turn back the clock one final time and end his career on a high note on Saturday.

Retire

Frankie Edgar’s legendary career did not get a fairytale ending at UFC 281. Fighting in his final fight before retiring from the sport, Edgar was flattened by a brutal knee from Chris Gutierrez to end the bantamweight bout in the first round.

Gutierrez got off to a quick start, landing strikes from all angles while also feinting and using his footwork to keep Edgar at distance. While Edgar was able to absorb the first flurry of strikes from Gutierrez, it was clear he needed to change where the fight was taking place.

Edgar tried to do that, changing levels and shooting for a takedown. Gutierrez realized the shot was coming and threw a knee straight down the middle, connecting to Edgar’s head and sending him crashing to the mat.

The end of the fight came at just the 2:01 mark of Round 1.

Ahead of the event, Edgar, a former lightweight champion and multi-time featherweight title challenger, had announced that the fight would be his final professional bout.

He was able to give a brief post-fight interview, stating that the result was obviously not how the final chapter of his storied career to play out.

“I love this sport, man,” Edgar said. “I didn’t want to go out like that. This sport is a bitch. But I’ve got my family and that’s all that matters.”
