Swimming sensation Emma McKeon produced a stunning come-from-behind final leg in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay to help her ecstatic teammates pocket an unexpected $37,000 world record bonus on an excellent first evening for Australia at the World Shortcourse Championships in Melbourne.

On a night where Lani Pallister celebrated her maiden world title in the 400m freestyle, McKeon pulled off what might turn out to be the moment of the week that brought back memories of Ian Thorpe mowing down American Gary Hall Jr in a relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Despite never winning 4x100m freestyle gold at the World Shortcourse Championships, Australia were the odds-on favourites to get the job done, but found themselves in a spot of bother early in the race.

After decent splits from Mollie O’Callaghan (52.19), Madi Wilson (51.28) and Meg Harris (52 seconds), Australia found themselves in third place and trailing by 0.98 seconds when McKeon dived in for a rescue mission with the US well out in front.

The reigning Olympic 100m freestyle champion conjured something mighty special to hit the lead with one lap to go in the 25-metre pool.

With a vociferous home crowd roaring her home, McKeon touched the wall 0.86 seconds ahead of the Americans, who capitulated in the dying stages.

She completed her secondary education in 2012 from The Illawarra Grammar School and following graduation, at the age of 18, relocated to Brisbane to train under Vince Raleigh at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in 2014.

In 2015, McKeon switched coaches again and began training under Michael Bohl, initially at Brisbane’s St Peters Western Swimming Club before the pair relocated to Griffith University on the Gold Coast in 2017 where McKeon studied a bachelor’s degree in public health and health promotion with a major in nutrition.

Emma McKeon enjoyed some alone time with her boyfriend Cody Simpson on Thursday as they visited a secluded beach.

The Olympic swimmer, 28, posted a gallery of sun-drenched snaps to Instagram of the athletic couple enjoying a well-deserved break from training.

The pair, dubbed Australia’s new ‘swimming power couple’, smiled for a selfie in one snap as they rested on a blue and white towel.

The rose tattoo on his bicep stood out as he inspected the board before hitting the waves for a surf.

Emma captioned the gallery of photos: ‘Days like these with you.’

Emma’s followers complimented her on the gorgeous photos.

Cody’s mother Angie wrote ‘awwww’, while another another fan said they were the ‘perfect match’.

The Commonwealth Games athletes first hit it off several months ago as training partners under gun coach Michael Bohl.
