McKeon was born on 24 May 1994 in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.
She is the sister of Kaitlin (National age swimmer and Paramedicine student), Olympian David McKeon, and the daughter of four-time Commonwealth gold medalist and two-time Olympian Ron McKeon, both of whom are also swimmers.
Her mother, Susie, was also a swimmer who competed in the Commonwealth Games and her uncle, Rob Woodhouse, was a two-time Olympian.
She completed her secondary education in 2012 from The Illawarra Grammar School and following graduation, at the age of 18, relocated to Brisbane to train under Vince Raleigh at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in 2014.
In 2015, McKeon switched coaches again and began training under Michael Bohl, initially at Brisbane’s St Peters Western Swimming Club before the pair relocated to Griffith University on the Gold Coast in 2017 where McKeon studied a bachelor’s degree in public health and health promotion with a major in nutrition.

Simpson was born at Logan Hospital in Meadowbrook, Queensland, to Brad and Angie Simpson.
He attended All Saints Anglican School throughout his upbringing. He has two younger siblings, Tom and Alli.

Emma McKeon, Australia’s most successful Olympian, has set another record with a crucial leg in a world record time in the 4x100m relay at the world short-course championships in Melbourne.
McKeon swam the first sub-50 second 100m freestyle split by a woman with a time of 49.96 seconds.
She will start favourite to take Cate Campbell’s 100m freestyle mark of 50.25 seconds later this week.
Entering the water with the team in third place and a second behind the leading Americans, 28-year-old McKeon overhauled the field to secure the gold.
It was the first time Australia had won the short course title.
“I always put my best races together in a relay – I love the team event,” said McKeon, who owns 11 Olympic medals.
“It’s pretty cool (to go sub-50) – there’s some incredible short course who have been racing years before me.
“I think Cate (Campbell) has got our world record so there’s high calibre there so it’s pretty cool to be doing 49 in a relay.
“It wasn’t something I was thinking about, it was just about touching first.”
The team clocked three minutes 25.43 seconds as the USA (3:26.29) and Canada (3:28.06) rounded out the podium with the first two teams both eclipsing the 2014 record of 3.26.53 set by the Dutch.
