Martinez made a huge save in the final moments of extra-time to take the game to spot-kicks and then proceeded to make the difference in the shootout.

And he proceeded to hold it in front of his groin and make a rude gesture as he made his way back to join his team-mates.

‘Emi Martinez is a very positive guy and told his team-mates he was going to save some penalties,’ revealed Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni.

BBC Sport’s pundits at the game were all in agreement too that Martinez’s antics played a huge part in the victory.

Emiliano Martinez may not have made Qatar officials all that happy as the goalkeeper pumped his crotch after being given the Golden Glove medal for the competition. The trophy is shaped like a hand.

After the gesture, one broadcaster was heard muttering, “Oh no,” on the Fox telecast. On BBC, someone said, “No, don’t do that, Emi. Don’t do that.”

Emi Martinez showcased his party trick during Argentina’s penalty shootout win over France in the World Cup final in Qatar as he helped his side to victory in typical Martinez fashion.

It was another demonstration of the Aston Villa keeper’s sportsmanship during a penalty shootout, in which he looks to disrupt opposing players in the hope of unsettling the opposition.

The triumph here marks the height of his incredible journey, from playing for Oxford United in the fourth tier to being a World Cup winner for Argentina in 10 years – it’s a remarkable story.

And now his penalty shootout antics can be marked down as a regular occurrence, having won three shootouts with the national team in under a year and a half, and now he’s a World Cup champion.

Martinez, 30, first produced for his country during the 2021 Copa America tournament, in what was his first major tournament as he saved three penalties during the semi-final win over Colombia.

They went onto win their first international trophy for 28 years following that and he produced again this tournament against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, and now against France when it really mattered.
