Martínez is a former Argentina youth international, representing his country at under-17 and under-20 levels.
In his first season at the club, he kept a club record 15 clean sheets in the Premier League.
He earned his first senior cap for the men’s national team in 2021, helping his nation win the 2021 Copa América, winning the Golden Glove and keeping a clean sheet in the final.
Martínez went on to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, when he also won the Golden Glove for his performance in the tournament.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez shocked fans watching the World Cup final as he made a lewd gesture after receiving the Golden Glove award following his star showing in their victory.
Argentina triumphed over France, winning on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw.
Martinez made a huge save in the final moments of extra-time to take the game to spot-kicks and then proceeded to make the difference in the shootout.
And he proceeded to hold it in front of his groin and make a rude gesture as he made his way back to join his team-mates.
‘Emi Martinez is a very positive guy and told his team-mates he was going to save some penalties,’ revealed Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni.
BBC Sport’s pundits at the game were all in agreement too that Martinez’s antics played a huge part in the victory.
Whether his dance moves after a superb save during the penalty shootout or winning the golden glove celebration.
However, his lewd gesture after winning the golden glove has caused a stir.
Martínez was called up to the Argentina senior squad to replace Oscar Ustari to face Nigeria in June 2011.
He received his second senior call up against Germany and Ecuador on 9 and 13 October 2019; he was an unused substitute for both friendly matches.

Martínez was included in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, and played in each of his team’s games.
He saved two penalties in a shoot-out against the Netherlands in the quarter final, helping his team make it to the last four.
In the final, Martínez saved a penalty from Kingsley Coman in a penalty shootout helping them win the tournament via a 4–2 shootout victory after the game had ended in a 3–3 draw after extra time.
He won the Golden Glove award for his performances in the tournament.
Martínez caused controversy after being presented with the award, when he presented a lewd gesture with the hand shaped trophy, holding it in front of his groin whilst pulling a face.
This gesture was done in front of both FIFA and Qatari officials, whilst commentators expressed their disapproval at his behaviour.
Online, Martínez’s gesture produced divided reactions, varying from calling for him to be stripped of the award, to saying that it was the best moment of The World Cup.
