NBA legend Dwyane Wade came out in support of his daughter Zaya and slammed his ex-wife Siovaughn Funches-Wade, who filed an objection in court to their daughter Zaya changing her name and gender.
TODAY reports that on November 1, Funches-Wade submitted a request to a Los Angeles county court that 15-year-old Zaya Wade, wait until the age of 18 to make her change.
She accused her ex-husband, who she also shares 20-year-old son Zaire Wade with, of attempting to profit off Zaya’s transition.
But Dwyane hit back, posting on Instagram: “Since this must be the new way of parenting, I guess I have to address these allegations here, which is a damn shame.
“While I’m on a life-changing trip in our motherland, Africa, I’ve received a social media post about me forcing our 15-year-old child to be someone she’s not and to do something against her will. These are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children.”
“While none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag my name through the mud, I’m very disappointed that she continuously find ways of centering herself and HER needs, without regard to her children.

Dwyane Wade just fully went off on his ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches, after she criticized him for the way he parents their daughter, Zaya Wade.

If you missed it, Siohvaughn reportedly filed a petition recently to stop him from helping Zaya, who is transgender, change her name and gender until she’s 18.
According to Today, Siohvaughn said in court documents that she had “concerns” that Dwyane may be “pressuring [their] child to move forward with the name and gender change in order to capitalize on the financial opportunities that he has received from companies, and will receive,” based on statements he allegedly made to her.
Dwyane responded on Instagram, writing that it was a “damn shame” that the matter was even brought to the public. “Since this must be the new way of parenting, I guess I have to address these allegations here, which is a damn shame,” he began. “While I’m on a life-changing trip in our motherland, Africa, I’ve received a social media post about me forcing our 15 year old child to be someone she’s not and to do something against her will. These are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children.”
Dwyane said that while no one was really surprised by her “attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag [his] name through the mud.”
Dwyane also shares a son with Siohvaughn, a son with Aja Metoyer, and a daughter with now-wife Gabrielle Union. He was awarded sole custody of both of his and Siohvaughn’s children in 2011.
He then mentioned how Zaya has struggled because she’s had to deal with “unsolicited and harmful attention and debates about her gender and sexuality from those who are committed to not listening to her, much less even knowing her.”

In February 2020, the professional basketball player announced that Zaya was transgender. “First of all, me and my wife, Gabrielle Union, we are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re proud allies as well,” Wade said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, adding, “We take our roles and our responsibilities as parents very seriously.”
At the time, the athlete noted that it was the couple’s “job as parents to listen” to their children and to “give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can.
Wade welcomed son Zaire in 2002 and daughter Zaya in 2007 with his ex Siohvaughn Funches. In 2013, the former NBA player became a dad to son Xavier, whom he shares with Aja Metoyer. After tying the knot with Union, the couple welcomed their daughter, Kaavia, via a surrogate in November 2018.
The actress has also been candid about learning more about Zaya’s gender identity. “It’s watching the love handle the hate that has been encouraging,” the We’re Going to Need More Wine author told Variety in May 2020. “We’re just loving and accepting our kids, which is not revolutionary.
Ahead of Pride in June 2022, Wade praised his daughter for her ability to be honest about her personal journey. “I went years without telling my chef that I don’t like cilantro on my burger — as an adult, it took me years to have the confidence to say that,” he said to CNN at the time. “My daughter, at 8 years old, had the confidence to say, ‘This is who I am. This is who I want to be.’”
