Jackson was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles.
He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, the same high school as future Philadelphia Eagles teammate Winston Justice and many other current NFL players.
And he became one of the top wide receiver recruits in the nation, with many collegiate football programs pursuing his services.
Also he was named the 2004 Glenn Davis Award winner by the Los Angeles Times as Southern California’s player of the year.
He also ran track and played baseball and was scouted by both the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies in his senior year. In track, he was timed at 10.5 seconds in the 100 meters.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, free agent WR DeSean Jackson is signing with the Baltimore Ravens following his workout.
Jackson, 35, most recently played with the Los Angeles Rams and Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.
The Ravens entered the season with a relatively thin receiving core, but the injury to WR Rashod Bateman increased Baltimore’s need for weapons, especially during a strong season from QB Lamar Jackson.
DeSean Jackson likely will be mostly used as a deep, speed threat and potentially won’t hold consistent fantasy value.
The Ravens have yet to officially confirm Jackson’s signing, so it’s unclear if he’ll end up on the active roster or practice squad off the bat.
If it’s the latter, he’d be eligible for three elevations to the game-day roster before the Ravens would have to sign him as a permanent member of the 53-man roster.
A 14-year pro, Jackson split time between the Rams and Raiders in 2021, appearing in 16 games and recording 20 receptions for 454 yards and two touchdowns on 34 targets.
Desean Jackson Fantasy 2022
The Baltimore Ravens have signed free-agent wide receiver DeSean Jackson to their practice squad.
The 35-year-old is not ready to call it a career and might still have a little left in the tank. He hauled in 20 receptions for 454 yards and two touchdowns between the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Rams last season.
And the Ravens are in desperate need of a playmaking receiver. Jackson should give Baltimore a possible deep threat for quarterback Lamar Jackson.
It’s uncertain what kind of fantasy value Jackson will have in Baltimore. He’ll likely be a risky boom-or-bust option as a deep ball threat.
DeSean Jackson signed a 1 year, $2,000,000 contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, including an average annual salary of $2,000,000.

Veteran wide receiver DeSean Jackson is joining the Baltimore Ravens for the duration of the 2022 season, agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.
Jackson said in April that he was considering retirement but was open to playing the 2022 season if he found the right situation. He named teams with top quarterbacks as his preferred destination, and recently expressed interest in joining the Philadelphia Eagles or Green Bay Packers.
The 35-year-old split the 2021 season between the Los Angeles Rams and Las Vegas Raiders. In 16 combined games, he totaled just 20 catches for 454 yards and two touchdowns.
