What happened to Derrick Lewis
UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis was taken to hospital hours before his scheduled fight against Serghei Spivac, forcing the promotion to cancel the bout.
Lewis and Spivac were due to headline the UFC’s latest card at the promotion’s Apex venue on Saturday night but the bout was cancelled during the show.
The three-round light heavyweight clash between Kennedy Nzechukwu against Ion Cutelaba was promoted to the main event in Las Vegas.
UFC announcer Brendan Fitzgerald told fans: “We have some unfortunate news to share with you. Our main event was due to be Derrick Lewis against Serghei Spivac. There is a non-Covid, non-weight cutting illness on the Derrick Lewis side so the main event today has been cancelled; you hate to see it.”
A statement from the UFC read: “Due to illness, Derrick Lewis has been removed from his heavyweight bout with Serghei Spivac. As a result, this bout has been removed from today’s card. Also the featured prelim flyweight bout between Charles Johnson and Zhalgas Zhumagulov will move to the main card.
So “The new main event will be a three round bout between Kennedy Nzechukwu and Ion Cutelaba. Due to injury, Rodolfo Vieira has been removed from his middleweight bout with Cody Brundage. As a result, this bout has been removed from this weekend’s card.”
Fight Cancelled
The Derrick Lewis vs. Serghei Spivac main event at UFC Vegas 65 has been cancelled just hours before the fight was set to take place.
On Saturday’s broadcast, it was announced that Lewis suffered an illness that forced him to go to the hospital and he was not cleared to compete Saturday against Spivac.
It’s devastating news to the card, which was already underway when Lewis needed medical attention that ultimately led to his removal from the main event.
With Lewis vs. Spivac cancelled, the main card will move forward with five total fights with light heavyweights Ion Cutelaba and Kennedy Nzechukwu now sitting in the headline spot. So That bout remains a three-round affair.
Also It’s an unfortunate end to fight week for Lewis, who was looking to bounce back after suffering back-to-back knockout losses in his most recent appearances.
He fell to Tai Tuivasa in a barnburner back in February and then lasted just 55 seconds in a fight against Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 277 this past July.
As for Spivac, he’ll miss out on the biggest fight of his career after picking up wins in his past two fights with a 5-1 record overall in his past six appearances.
