David English, the larger-than-life “Godfather of English cricket” has died at the age of 76. Check out his cause of death in this article.

English was a British charity fundraiser, cricketer, actor, writer and was president of RSO Records.

He was appointed MBE in the 2003 Birthday Honours, and CBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours for services to cricket and charity.

English founded the Bunbury Cricket Club, through which he raised £14m for charity. He was involved in the creation of the Bunbury Festival, a national under-15s cricket tournament that has helped the careers of over 1000 first-class cricketers, and over 125 international players.

English was a journalist on the Daily Mail and then worked for Decca Records. At Decca he was press officer, handling publicity for artists including the Rolling Stones and Tom Jones.

He became President of RSO Records, signing artists including the Bee Gees and Eric Clapton.

English had a career in acting, appearing in the films A Bridge Too Far and Lisztomania.

He died of a heart attack on 12 November 2022, at the age of 76.

The following day the England cricket team playing in the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

Jos Buttler, who will lead his side out in the World Cup final against Pakistan, took to Twitter to post: “So sad to hear the news of David English passing away.

One of life’s great characters, so fun to spend time with and producer of some of the best English cricketers through his wonderful Bunbury Festivals. RIP.”

English, who in 2010 received a CBE for his services to cricket and charity, played for Marleybone CC and also worked on the ground at Lord’s.

But it was his founding of Bunbury Cricket Club, and support for the festival, which made him such an iconic figure.

Sharing a photo of English alongside Sky News’ Mark Austin, the TalkTV host paid tribute to a “brilliantly entertaining” man.

Piers said: “Had many of the funniest days of my life ⁦ @HomeOfCricket with this wonderfully ebullient & brilliantly entertaining character.

“A great cricket man whose ⁦@BunburyCricket festival developed so many England stars, who all loved him. Very sad news.”

England T20 captain Jos Buttler also paid tribute to “one of life’s great characters”.

Buttler said: “So sad to hear the news of David English passing away.

“One of life’s great characters, so fun to spend time with and producer of some of the best English cricketers through his wonderful Bunbury Festivals. RIP.”

Bunbury Cricket runs an annual tournament for the best under-15 boys players in England.

More than 100 England cricketers, including Joe Root and Ben Stokes, have played in the tournament.
