The rally is an off-road endurance event. The terrain that the competitors traverse is much tougher than that used in conventional rallying, and the vehicles used are typically true off-road vehicles and motorcycles, rather than modified on-road vehicles.

Most of the competitive special sections are off-road, crossing dunes, mud, camel grass, rocks, and erg among others.

The distances of each stage covered vary from short distances up to 800–900 kilometres (500–560 mi) per day.

The event is open to amateur and professional entries, amateurs typically making up about eighty percent of the participants.

When does the Dakar Rally start 

The event will take place between 31 December 2022 and 15 January 2023.

This will be the fourth time Saudi Arabia had hosted the event. For the second year running, the event will also be the first round of the World Rally-Raid Championship.

On 10 November 2022 ASO announced the list of competitors.

In the truck category, the Kamaz and MAZ factory teams – two of the most dominant teams in the category – elected not to enter the 2023 Dakar Rally due to complaints that the FIA would force them to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine to enter.

The two teams are based in Russia and Belarus, respectively.

While people around the world are celebrating the new year, the participants in the 2023 Dakar Rally will be climbing into their cockpits for the first time.

The event kicks off with the prologue, which has a manageable length of only 10 km, and takes the participants around the Sea Camp in western Saudi Arabia. The following day, however, the mega-event really picks up speed.

The 45th Dakar Rally will run from December 31-January 15, 2023, finishing up on the kingdom’s eastern sea border.

Launched in 1979 between Paris and the Senegalese capital Dakar, the celebrated endurance challenge moved to Saudi Arabia for the first time in 2020 after a decade in South America.

As host of other sports besides the Dakar,  the Saudis have dismissed accusations of “sportswashing” voiced by human rights groups. The kingdom is also staging high-profile football, cycling, Formula E, Formula One, golf and boxing events.
