Originally, the tournament was scheduled to be played from 9 February to 26 March 2023 but, in July 2020 it was announced that the tournament would be delayed to an October–November window, with reports citing the disruption of the qualification schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As with the previous edition, the tournament will feature ten teams. The main route for qualification will be the 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League tournament.

For the World Cup, the top seven sides plus the hosts (India) from the thirteen competitors in the Super League will qualify.

The remaining five teams, along with five Associate sides, will play in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, from which two teams will go through to the final tournament.

There should be 10 teams playing in the 2023 ICC cricket world cup same as the year 2019. The format will be the same as the cricket world cup 1992 and 2019; where every team play with the remaining other teams in a round-robin (randomly selected team) fashion. Finally, 4 teams will play a semi-final and eventual top 2 in the final.

Hosts

This will be the first time the competition is held entirely in India. Three previous editions were partially hosted there – 1987, 1996, and 2011.

There will be broadly 4 types of tournaments. These are the Men’s cricket world league 2, the challenge league, Men’s cricket world cup qualifier, and ICC world cup super league tournament.

The Men’s Cricket World League 2 ODIs will start on 19th March 2021 with Oman hosting the USA and Nepal in the sixth series of League 2. Six ODIs will be played in this men’s cricket world league 2 series with Oman currently placed at the top with 16 points and the United States with 12 points.

A total of 96  matches will be played across the 14 series that is scheduled to be played in 2021 and 2022 respectively. The remaining 2 series will be played in early 2023.
