Joe Gibbs has lost both of his sons. J.D. Gibbs died in 2019 of degenerative neurological disease; he was also 49 at the time of his death. Coy Gibbs succeeded his older brother as vice chairman of the family-run NASCAR organization.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Coy Gibbs,” NASCAR chairman and CEO Jim France said.

“On behalf of the France Family and all of NASCAR, I extend my deepest condolences to Joe, Pat, Heather, the Gibbs family and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing on the loss of Coy, a true friend and racer.”

NASCAR held a moment of silence for Coy Gibbs before the Cup championship Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, where JGR’s Christopher Bell was racing for the title.

Kyle Busch, in his final race after 15 years with the team, was crying on pit road before the start of the race.

Coy Gibbs was involved in an automobile accident.

Gibbs is the driver for Joe Gibbs Racing. It was he who started it by keeping Jones from winning at Martinsville.

When Gibbs was celebrating his victory over Jones, the audience yelled, “Thank You, Grandpa.” He was the one who was accountable for initiating it in the first place.

Gibbs stated on Thursday that he is sorry for the remark and that he did not express the term in the way that he intended to convey it. He also acknowledged that he did not apologize for the remark. He added that he did not regret making the statement and did not apologize for it.

However, he feels terrible about almost everything that happened the previous weekend and has been on an apology tour at JGR, with Jones, and with Toyota, the latter of which is incensed that one of its cars was removed from the championship. The fact that one of Toyota’s cars was eliminated from the championship has the company seething with wrath.
