Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool acted quickly to complete a deal for Cody Gakpo to beat Manchester United to his signature.

The Reds announced the signing of Gakpo, 23, from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday. It’s believed the Premier League side have agreed an initial £37million transfer fee for the Netherlands international, a fee that could rise to £45m with add-ons.

Man Utd were the favourites for Gakpo’s signature, yet Liverpool swooped in to agree a deal. Klopp has confirmed they’ve been interested in the forward “for a long time” and is excited to see what he can do in the Premier League during the coming weeks.

Klopp was asked about the transfer by Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s fixture against Leicester at Anfield on Friday night. Gakpo watched the 2-1 home win from the stands.

“Yeah for sure [we brought the transfer forward], but we’ve been interested in Cody for a long time or a while,” said Klopp. “You know our situation so we can’t pick players up on top, on top and stuff like this.

Gakpo was called up to the senior Netherlands squad for UEFA Euro 2020 and made his debut in the third match of the group stage against North Macedonia as a substitute in the 79th minute for Frenkie de Jong.

Thereby, he became the first Netherlands player to make his international debut at a European Championship since Martien Vreijsen in 1980.

He was named to the 2022 World Cup squad and had an immediate impact, scoring in three consecutive Group A matches against Senegal, Ecuador, and Qatar.

Highlights

Liverpool fans are excited at the prospect of climbing up the table and into the top four in the second phase of the season and that excitement has been boosted by the arrival of a new signing.

Cody Gakpo joined the club on a transfer from PSV Eindhoven earlier in the week and fans have been enjoying footage of him meeting Jurgen Klopp and other members of staff at the Melwood training facility in Liverpool.

The Reds are in action on Friday evening against Leicester City and the question on every fans lips is whether the Gakpo will be in action.

Unfortunately for those heading to Anfield or getting ready to watch on the sofa at 20:00 GMT on Friday, Gakpo is not allowed to play for Liverpool yet despite the transfer being made official.

This is because the transfer window has not officially opened yet, meaning the player cannot be registered by the club for their Premier League matches until January 1 2023.

He will almost certainly be at the stadium and watching from the stands, but he will not be taking the field until at least the game away at Brentford on January 2.
