Carla Esparza’s foray into mixed martial arts (MMA) began when she started wrestling for the varsity team during her junior year at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California.
After winning multiple local and national high-school wrestling tournaments, Esparza was awarded a scholarship to Menlo College, a NAIA Division school in northern California, to wrestle under coach and former two-time Olympian Lee Allen.
In 2008 and 2009, Esparza was a women’s wrestling All-American with the Menlo Oaks.

Esparza defeated Rose Namajunas via split decision to regain the 115-pound title in the co-main event of UFC 274. Both women were subject to heavy criticism from the MMA community for their lack of action in their battle.
It was apparent that both women were familiar with each other’s skills going into the bout, but the action never really picked up steam through 25 minutes.
The pair first met at The Ultimate Fighter 20 finale in 2014, where Esparza submitted ‘Thug Rose’ to become the division’s inaugural champion.

Carla Esparza decorates her wedding gown with newly won UFC Title- Carla Esparza reclaimed her UFC Strawweight Championship after defeating Rose Namajunas by a split decision in the co main event of UFC 274 and just a week after the title fight has tied wedding knots Matt Lomeli.
In photo from the ceremony, you can see fellow fighter Felice Herrig place the title around Carla’s waist as she prepares to walk down the aisle … with the crowd cheering for the champ.
Carla said that fans gave her the idea to wear the belt if she was victorious against Rose … and she did just that!!
Lomeli considers himself to be a private person. He didn’t know what he was signing up for initially when he reached out to a potential match on the Coffee Meets Bagel dating app in 2020.
His match on the app was former UFC strawweight champion Carla Esparza. Purposely hiding her profession in her profile, Esparza listed herself simply as a “professional athlete.”
“Being a professional fighter can definitely either steer people towards you or away,” Esparza told ESPN. “So I just kind of wanted to keep it open.”
In lieu of the details of her having held gold in the most prestigious MMA organization, Esparza’s profile detailed her love of adventure and travel.
