He was one of 54 defensive backs to receive an invitation to the NFL combine.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, he set a new combine and world record for standing broad-jump by leaping 12 feet, 3 inches (3.73m), surpassing Jamie Collins’s old record of 11 feet, 7 inches (3.53m) set in 2013.

He was limited to the bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, short shuttle, and three-cone.

Jones is not retiring, a source told Sportsworldzone.

Jones, 30, underwent surgery in March to clean up a lingering injury he dealt with during the 2021 season.

A source told Sportsworldzone at the time that Jones was expected to be ready for training camp in July, but he was never activated off the PUP list.

A former first-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2015, Jones signed a five-year, $82 million deal in 2020.

He represents an $18.3 million cap hit in 2023, but the Dolphins can save $13.6 million by releasing or trading him after June 1.

Jones made the Pro Bowl in 2018 and has 57 pass deflections and four interceptions in his eight-year career.

According to Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson, Jones is not retiring — but he is expected to be cut by the Dolphins. When Jones does retire eventually, he won’t be alone in his struggle with the lasting impact of the game.

Earlier this month, a group of 10 former NFL players filed a lawsuit accusing the league of falsehoods and legal violations in denying disability benefits. The potential class-action lawsuit was filed Feb. 9 to a Baltimore federal court.

Like Jones, the plaintiffs claim football left them with lingering physical injuries. Some of the former players also say that cognitive injuries from the game continue to complicate their lives. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL Disability Board are named as defendants.

Byron Jones injuries

Former Dolphins cornerback Byron Jones has warned his fellow NFL players to take control of their own health, after injuries have left him unable to ‘run or jump’ just three years after inking a megadeal.

Jones missed the entire 2022 season after receiving surgery last March on his Achilles tendon, but remains under contract with the Dolphins through 2024 after signing a five-year $82million deal in 2020.

That hefty payday, however, was not worth the ‘regrettable cost’ to the one-time Pro Bowler’s body, he said.

‘Much has changed in 8 years. Today I can’t run or jump because of my injuries sustained playing this game,’ Jones said in response to a 2015 tweet praising his jumping abilities.

‘It was an honor and privilege to play in the NFL but it came at a regrettable cost I did not foresee,’ he concluded. ‘In my opinion, no amount of professional success or financial gain is worth avoidable chronic pain and disabilities. Godspeed to the draft class of 2023.

Though Jones’ post appeared to indicate he was retiring, a source told ESPN that is not the case.

After undergoing the Achilles surgery, which ESPN called a ‘clean up,’ Jones was initially expected to be healthy by training camp in 2022, according to the publication.

Career stats

The Dallas Cowboys selected Jones in the first round (27th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. He was the fourth cornerback selected in 2015.

On June 11, 2015, the Dallas Cowboys signed Jones to a four-year, $8.60 million contract that includes $6.93 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $6.51 million.

Throughout training camp, Jones competed for a job as a starting cornerback, against Morris Claiborne and Tyler Patmon, after Orlando Scandrick tore his MCL and ACL.

Head coach Jason Garrett named Jones the backup cornerback behind Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne.

On March 21, 2020, Jones signed a five-year, $82 million contract with the Miami Dolphins, making him at the time the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

In Week 14 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Jones forced a fumble on Mecole Hardman that was recovered by the Dolphins and intercepted a pass thrown by Patrick Mahomes during the 33–27 loss. This was Jones’ first interception since the 2017 season.

In Week 17 against the Buffalo Bills, Jones recorded his career high second interception of the season off a pass thrown by Josh Allen during the 56–26 loss.

Jones was placed on the reserve/PUP list to start the 2022 season, but was ultimately not activated during the season.

College

Jones accepted a scholarship from the University of Connecticut Huskies. As a redshirt freshman, he started 2 games at cornerback and six of the final seven games at safety.

As a sophomore, he started 12 games at safety, tallying 88 tackles (third on the team), one interception and 2 passes defensed.

The next year, he was switched to cornerback, starting 11-of-12 games, while registering 60 tackles (fourth on the team), 3 interceptions and 8 passes defensed.

Jones started 7 games at cornerback as a senior, posting 24 tackles, 2 interceptions and 4 passes defensed.

He had a 70-yard interception return against the University of South Florida in what ESPN announcers called “what might be the UConn play of the year”.

Also he missed the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for a shoulder injury suffered in a loss against East Carolina University.

He finished his college career with 223 total tackles, 8 interceptions and 2 touchdowns.
