Rodgers began his career as a defender at Ballymena United, where he stayed until he was signed by Reading at the age of 18, although a genetic knee condition forced him to retire at age 20.
He remained at Reading as a coach and then academy director, and continued to play non-league football at Newport, Witney Town and Newbury Town for several years.
After a period travelling around Spain to study coaching methods, he was invited by José Mourinho to leave Reading and join Chelsea as youth manager in 2004, later being promoted to reserve manager in 2006.
In 2008, he was appointed manager of Watford, where he remained until he accepted an offer to become manager of his former club Reading in 2009.
The boos that rang around King Power Stadium and the pointed words of manager Brendan Rodgers said everything about the growing troubles hanging like a shroud over Leicester City.
“This isn’t the club that it was a couple of years ago,” Rodgers said, following a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United that coincided with the end of a frustrating summer transfer window for the Foxes boss.
It is a club that has achieved so much in recent seasons, the glorious Premier League title triumph in 2016 and the FA Cup win under Rodgers in 2021, but there is an air of stagnation and discontent that smacks of the end of an era for Leicester City.
The Foxes had near misses with the Champions League, twice slipping out of the top four on the final day of the season under Rodgers, and perhaps the financial and footballing implications are being felt in full now.
Brendan Rodgers Leicester
After Leicester recruit only Wout Faes in otherwise non-existent summer of signings, while losing Kasper Schmeichel and Wesley Fofana, manager Brendan Rodgers says: “With the greatest respect we haven’t had the help in the market that this team needed”
Brendan Rodgers said it is “clear to see” his Leicester side have been weakened this summer but said he has full trust in the club’s board over their transfer strategy.
Rodgers’ side remain bottom of the Premier League after a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Thursday night, and Wout Faes, signed on Transfer Deadline Day, but too late to make his debut in that game, is their only senior summer signing.
That comes despite the sale of Wesley Fofana to Chelsea for more than £70m and the loss of club captain Kasper Schmeichel to Nice for an undisclosed fee.
In his programme notes for the United defeat, chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha blamed the need for “difficult, short-term decisions” to “protect the club’s long-term interests.”
