“We look forward to Brad getting started with us and working closely with the broader club and the football department for what will be an important pre-season.

What is doing now

Essendon have finally ended their search for a new coach, with Brad Scott  appointed on Thursday night.

The Bombers have undertaken a lengthy process to find a replacement for Ben Rutten, who left the club at the end of the home and away season after an underwhelming campaign at the helm.

Melbourne assistant Adam Yze has long been the frontrunner for the post, with Bombers legend James Hird also an outside chance of making a sensational return to the club.

However, Essendon have turned to former North Melbourne coach and current AFL football operations boss Scott, who was announced on Thursday evening.

‘Throughout the process, it was clear the club required a strong leader and Brad’s track record as a player, coach and administrator demonstrated this,’ president Dave Barham said.

‘We believe Brad has all the attributes to be the long-term coach of the Essendon Football Club. He’s a strong leader who will drive standards and establish a winning culture.

Scott held a mixed record with the Kangaroos, leading the club to two preliminary finals over his nine-and-a-half-year spell, before parting ways in 2019 with one year left on his deal.

He has since overseen sweeping changes to the rules of the game which have divided opinion among fans, particularly at the start of the season where the AFL clamped down on umpire dissent.

Despite their public roles, the senior coaches have been determined to keep it as a family affair, giving minimal information even to their respective clubs.

It is expected that neither of the twins will go to Sydney for the AFL draft or coaches meeting on Friday.

Ben was the youngest of five siblings in the Scott family.

North Melbourne Football club was among those to pass on condolences to the Scott family.

Geelong Football Club declined to comment on the private family matter.
