Mendy made his senior debut for France in 2017 after previously being capped by France youth teams at under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-21 levels. He was chosen in France’s squad for the 2018 World Cup which they won.

In August 2021, Manchester City suspended Mendy when he was charged with sexual offences.

In May 2022, he pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape, one of sexual assault and one of attempted rape, relating to six complainants.

The Manchester City left-back, 28, is accused of ten offences in total against seven women.

Mendy appeared at Chester Crown Court today to formally deny a final charge of rape.

He is now due to go on trial on Monday accused of eight counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape.

Mendy committed the offences against seven young women between October 2018 and August last year, it is said.

The latest count was allegedly carried out in July 2021 while Mendy was on police bail after his arrest in November 2020.

One of the charges was also carried out on August 23 – just three days before he was charged, it is said.

Mendy is also accused of raping a woman three times at a Cheshire mansion in October 2020.

The French international allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in early January 2021.

Co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, 40, is accused of eight counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault, relating to eight women.

The French left-back hasn’t played in the Premier League since undergoing knee surgery in November and suffered a setback following his return against Burton in the Carabao Cup last month.

The 24-year-old missed most of last season with another knee injury and his absence has forced City to rotate between a series of makeshift left-backs.

“(He’s) better,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

While Mendy is on the verge of returning, Guardiola confirmed that John Stones and Gabriel Jesus, who both missed Sunday’s Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea, have not recovered in time to face West Ham.

There was further damage inflicted on City’s Premier League title hopes during Sunday’s Wembley encounter, with Fernadinho and Aymeric Laporte suffering injuries that could rule them out until after next month’s international break.

“We were without John and Gabriel and they are still out and now with Dinho and Ayme,” Guardiola said.

“I don’t know (how long they’ll be out for), not really exactly.

Mendy, 28, is due at Chester Crown Court in northwest England to face eight counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape, relating to seven young women.

He pleaded not guilty in May to nine of the 10 charges, but was subsequently hit with the further rape count which has not yet been put to him in a court.

All the alleged offences are said to have taken place at Mendy’s home address in Prestbury near Macclesfield, also in northwest England, between October 2018 and August last year.

He is standing trial before a jury along with his co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, 40, who has also pleaded not guilty.

Matturie denies eight counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault, relating to eight young women. His alleged offences span from July 2012 to August last year.

Both the defendants are on bail, with Mendy subject to what a judge previously called “stringent” conditions, including the surrender of his passport.

After his arrest last August he was initially held at Altcourse prison in Liverpool, and then a prison in Manchester, before being freed on bail in January.

None of the women said to have been assaulted can be named under English law, which also places restrictions on what can be reported about the case.

So that’s all about Benjamin Mendy.
