Foster began his professional career in 2001 with Stoke City, having joined from Racing Club Warwick.
However, he never made an appearance for Stoke, and spent time on loan with Bristol City, Tiverton Town, Stafford Rangers, Kidderminster Harriers and Wrexham.
He switched permanently to Manchester United in July 2005, but again struggled to break into the first team, and he spent two successive seasons on loan to Watford from August 2005 until the end of the 2006–07 season.
Having played just 23 times for Manchester United (although he also played in the League Cup-winning teams of 2009 and 2010), Foster switched to Birmingham City in May 2010.
An ever-present in the league for Birmingham, Foster was also part of the Birmingham team that won the 2011 League Cup; he made a total of 43 appearances in that season.
Former Manchester United and England goalkeeper Ben Foster has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.
The eight-cap Three Lions international won the League Cup on three occasions – twice with United and once with Birmingham City – and made 536 senior appearances at club level during his career.
He was released by Watford at the expiry of his contract this summer and turned down a move to Newcastle this season.
Foster confirmed he was hanging up his gloves via a video released on his popular YouTube channel titled ‘It’s time to say goodbye’. The Leamington Spa native said: “I’ve got an announcement to make, it’s a big one. The time has finally come for me to announce my retirement.”
Foster opened up on how Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was willing to meet his sizeable wage demands to bring him to St James’ Park, after the Magpies were left light of options in goal following Martin Dubravka’s loan departure to Manchester United and the injury suffered by Karl Darlow.
However, the former West Brom shot-stopper decided against the move to Tyneside as it is a four-hour car journey from his family home in the Midlands, where he lives with his wife and two children.
Ben Foster Newcastle
Ex-Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has lifted the lid on the offer he received from Newcastle United and he has explained why he has decided to retire.
The 39-year-old was a free agent heading into the summer after his contract at Watford expired.
The Hornets suffered relegation last term but the experienced goalkeeper was one of their shining lights in the Premier League.
Foster had a spell at Manchester United earlier in his career before he impressed at Birmingham City and West Brom.
He remained a free agent late into the transfer window but Newcastle United emerged as a possible destination in recent weeks.
Their interest in Foster came after Karl Darlow picked up an injury. This left Newcastle without a backup goalkeeper to Nick Pope as Martin Dubravka has joined Man Utd on loan.
“I live in the Midlands and to get to Newcastle by car is about four hours – it’s a bit of a trek and it’s not one you can commute to every day back and forth,” Foster said.
“Even when I was at Watford I was driving back and forth every day. I’m established in the Midlands. It works, it is perfect for me. This offer comes in and it is Newcastle and genuinely, I’ve gone ‘oh my gosh, this is massive’.
Ben Foster is a Soccer Player who has a net worth of $20 million.
