Jurgen Klopp has revealed what instructions he gave Ben Doak before handing the 16-year-old his Liverpool debut.

The winger joined the Reds from Celtic in the summer and, having impressed in the club’s youth ranks this season, was handed a maiden senior call-up for Liverpool’s League Cup third round clash with Derby County.

A youthful Reds side needed penalties to overcome the Rams following a 0-0 draw as they booked their place in Thursday’s fourth round draw.

And Klopp was pleased to see Doak grab his opportunity with an eye-catching debut off the bench after replacing Fabio Carvalho in the 74th minute at Anfield.

“It’s good. It was nice to watch, really nice to watch. Coming in and immediately making an impact. A lot of things are obviously natural to him which is really helpful.

“Pretty sure his family were here tonight. I can remember when I saw them at the AXA when we signed the boy and how excited everybody was. Tonight is the next step. It’s cool, he showed up obviously.”

He helped the U17 team qualify for the 2022 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, but missed the tournament due to injury.

Doak was included in the under-21 squad for the first time in September 2022, aged 16.

He made his debut as a substitute on Thursday 22nd September 2022 against Northern Ireland, and scored within seven minutes as a substitute. In doing so, he became the youngest ever goalscorer for the Scotland U-21s.

Doak signed a contract with Liverpool in March 2022, with Celtic due to receive training compensation of around £600,000.

Carabao Cup

Stephen Warnock has highlighted the exciting talent that is Liverpool’s 16-year-old attacker, Ben Doak.

The young Scot got the nod from Jurgen Klopp to make his senior debut for the Merseysiders in the second-half of action with the tie goalless (at the time of writing).

“Ben Doak is a very exciting player. He’s very direct,” the former Red told BBC Radio 5 Live (via BBC Sport).

“He’s had such a rise that he started in the Under-18s at Liverpool, moved up to the Under-23s, scored a couple of goals and now he’s got his chance in the first team.

“He doesn’t shy away, he always wants to be positive.”

The Merseysiders face a potential penalty shootout against the League One-based outfit after both Tottenham and Arsenal were eliminate from the Carabao Cup by Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.

It says a great deal about the potential Liverpool have on their hands that Doak was arguably our most potent attacking threat following his arrival on the pitch.

Only time will tell whether the former Celtic youth prospect can realise his potential at Anfield, though the early signs are indeed positive.

Hopefully Klopp’s men can progress past Derby and earn further opportunities for the teenager to showcase his talent with the senior team.
