Round captained the Williamstown Football Club in the 1989–1991 seasons, and he coached the club from 1989 to 1993.

During his short time at the club, Round won 3 consecutive Gerry Callahan Medals (Williamstown best and fairest award) between 1987 and 1989. In 2009, Barry Round was named in the Williamstown Team of the Century in the Ruck Position.

In May 2014, Williamstown FC held their 150-year celebration and inducted Round as part of their inaugural Hall Of Fame team.

On the same night, he was elevated to Legend status at the club, being one of only 5 players to receive the honour.

In 2001, Round was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame with a citation that read: “Lion-hearted big man who represented Footscray and Sydney with distinction”. He was also a member of Sydney’s Team of the Century, which was announced in 2003.

Round died from organ failure while receiving palliative care on the Gold Coast.

His death has sparked an outpouring of grief as Round is remembered for his warm, humble, and generous spirit. 

Round was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and earned the Brownlow Medal in 1981.

He played 134 matches for the team before he was sacked at the start of the 1976 season and picked up by South Melbourne and played 193 games for the team.

Also He notched a total of 328 VFL/AFL games under his belt with his illustrious career including a stint as captain of the Sydney Swans between 1980 and 1984.

Round is perhaps best remembered for skippering the team when it moved from South Melbourne to Sydney and has been credited for helping to make the transition possible. 

He retired in 1985 before he became captain-coach of Williamstown and led the team to VFA Premierships in 1986 and 1990.

The 72-year-old AFL star Barry Round has passed away. According to the reports, Barry Round official cause of death was organ failure. He went into palliative care early this week and died in a Gold Coast hospital this morning, Saturday December 24, 2022.

Also “On behalf of the Williamstown Football Club I would like to pass on our deepest condolences to the Round family,” Baker said in a statement on the club’s website.

“The Seagull family is mourning the loss of a club legend and a gentleman who gave so much to our great game and our wonderful club.

“A dual premiership-winning player, J.J Liston Trophy winner, Norm Goss Medal recipient, three-time Gerry Callahan Medal winner, and WFC Team of the Century and Hall of Fame inductee says it all.

“Barry will be missed by so many and we have lost a true champion of the game”.
