On October 7, 2021, it was revealed that Mayfield was playing with a partially torn labrum which he suffered during the Browns Week 2 victory over the Houston Texans.

Mayfield continued to play with the injury until reaggravating it in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Due to the injury, Mayfield was ruled out for the Browns’ Week 7 game against the Denver Broncos, missing his first game since taking over as the Browns’ starter in 2018.

Despite having just two days to get comfortable with his new teammates and new offense, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Baker Mayfield led an eight-play, 98-yard game-winning drive on Thursday night — tossing a touchdown to Van Jefferson with just 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders, 17-16.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Rams’ 98-yard drive was the longest go-ahead touchdown drive that began in the final two minutes over the last 45 seasons. Teams are now 3-70 on the season when down 13-plus points in the final five minutes.

The last two NFL games have featured such a comeback. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, and the Rams on Thursday night.

Everything about Thursday night felt special for the Rams, almost as if it was meant to be. In fact, Mayfield had a hunch he would be claimed by the Rams after his release from the Carolina Panthers.

He told Amazon’s postgame crew that he booked a flight to Los Angeles before the Rams’ waiver wire claim was official.

“I took a gamble, I booked the flight before the waiver wire went through,” Mayfield said.

Despite not knowing the full offense, Mayfield completed 22 of 35 passes for 230 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

Mayfield said there was a short list of plays that he and head coach Sean McVay had for him, but that they “dipped” out of that list as the game went on.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield led the Los Angeles Rams to a late comeback win against the Las Vegas Raiders – just two days after joining them.

Mayfield joined the Carolina Panthers in July but they agreed to release the former number one draft pick on Monday.

The following day he was signed by the Rams and on Thursday he led two late touchdown drives as last season’s Super Bowl winners snatched a 17-16 win.

“It has been a wild 48 hours,” said Mayfield, 27. “What just happened?”

He added: “It sucked having to leave [the Panthers] but when it works out like this, it’s for the best.”

The Rams had lost their last six and came into the game with a 3-9 record, the worst start to a season by any Super Bowl winner.

Matthew Stafford, who led the Rams to the NFL title in his first season, is out with a spinal cord contusion while back-up quarterback John Wolford has been struggling with a neck injury.

Mayfield replaced Wolford on the Rams’ second possession and went on to complete 22 of 35 passes for 230 yards, including the game-winning 23-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds remaining.

Mayfield, who was traded by the Browns in July to make way for Deshaun Watson, directed a 17-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a one-yard Cam Akers touchdown run to make it 16-10 with 3:19 remaining.

Despite having had limited time to learn the Rams’ playbook, he then led a 98-yard drive in just 95 seconds to set up Jefferson’s match-winning moment.

Rams

Everything seemed to be up against the Rams quarterback in his debut. Somehow, he led Los Angeles on an unlikely, redemptive game-winning drive.

Mayfield arrived in Los Angeles Tuesday, having been claimed off waivers by Sean McVay and rescued from the waning moments of a dying season with an interim staff in Carolina.

The catch? He had to perform well on short notice in prime time with receivers he didn’t know, for a coach he’d met on an airplane four years ago, against a defense that had Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones, protected by an offensive line made of collapsible pong tables.

He had to watch his first two scoring drives die, one because his running back fumbled and one because his offensive lineman (whom he probably hadn’t met yet) shoved an opponent in the chest and cost his team a 15-yard penalty.

Also he had to take his game-winning opportunity from the 2-yard line with less than two minutes to play and no timeouts.

Heading into this game, we were all prepared to watch the Mayfield Rorschach test play out before our eyes.

As a prospect, he elicits polar opposite opinions from supporters and detractors, like they couldn’t possibly be describing the same person.

Likewise for people who watched his insurance commercials unbothered, and the other ones who chucked a remote at the television. Clearly, he is not for everybody.
