That summer, he played in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field. During his senior year, he signed to play college baseball at West Virginia University.

Manoah was not drafted in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft out of high school and thus enrolled at West Virginia.

In 2017, as a freshman at West Virginia, Manoah appeared in 19 games (ten starts), pitching to a 1–1 record with a 3.07 ERA, earning a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.

As a sophomore in 2018, Manoah went 3–5 with a 4.00 ERA in 23 games (eight starts). He particularly struggled with command, posting a 1.50 WHIP.

That summer, he pitched in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Chatham Anglers where he went 4–3 with a 3.57 ERA in nine starts.

It’s safe to say that Alek Manoah is not the biggest fan for All-Star Gerrit Cole. The Toronto Blue Jays starter has not hidden his feelings towards the New York Yankees ace and his alleged use of Spider Tack.

Spider Tack has become one of baseball’s stickiest issues. While doctoring baseballs has always been a part of the game, the introduction of the sticky foreign substance has been an issue that the MLB has tried to crack down on in recent years.

Gerrit Cole has been called out by several players for being the most notorious abuser of the banned substance.

Not only is Manoah on record for calling out Cole, but former American MVP Josh Donaldson also took shots at the All-Star prior to becoming teammates with the Yankees.

In late 2022, Manoah joined former Toronto Raptors forward Serge Ibaka on Sportsnet’s “How Hungry Are You?” podcast, and during the interview, the pitcher revealed that he believes Cole is the “worst cheater” in baseball history.

“He cheated,” Manoah said, showing a baseball grip as he discussed the allegations against Cole. “He used a lot of sticky stuff to make his pitches better, and he kinda got called out on it.”

Alek Manoah played the role of the antagonist earlier on in the season but Gerrit Cole has had the last laugh. While the Yankees ace is primed for a Cy Young run, the Toronto Blue Jays star has been sent down, marking a new low in a season of failures.

Four baseball gloves rested on the top shelf of Alek Manoah’s clubhouse locker at Rogers Centre on Tuesday afternoon, his garments on a rack below with his black chair in its usual position nearby.

The only things missing were the baby blue jersey and matching ballcap that were hanging at each of his teammates’ stalls ahead of Toronto’s night game against Houston.

The Blue Jays sent Manoah down to the minor leagues earlier in the day. It was unclear when he’ll be back.

The right-hander was optioned to the rookie-level Florida Complex League after another poor start a night earlier.

“It’s not a knee-jerk reaction,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “Like I’ve been saying all along, we want to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to help him get better.

“We feel like that’s the proper, first initial step.”

Manoah’s latest start was the shortest outing of his young career. He was shelled for six earned runs over one-third of an inning in an 11-4 loss to the Astros.

The six-foot-six 285-pounder hasn’t won a game in over two months and his confidence appears shot. The Blue Jays have lost nine of the last 10 games that Manoah has started.

Schneider and pitching coach Pete Walker gave him the news early Tuesday afternoon.

Alek Manoah signed a 1 year / $745,660 contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, including $745,660 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $745,660.

In 2023, Manoah will earn a base salary of $745,660, while carrying a total salary of $745,660.

Alek Manoah is taking a renewal from the Toronto Blue Jays for the second straight year, once again turning down a raise based on the club’s pre-set scale to make a point about fair value for pre-arbitration players.

The 25-year-old right-hander will earn $745,650, according to an industry source, the midway point between the big-league minimum salary of $720,000 and the raise he would have gotten under club’s system for awarding increases based on playing and service time.

Manoah was renewed at $706,200 last year and proceeded to finish third in American League Cy Young Award voting after logging 196.2 innings across 31 starts while posting a 2.24 ERA.

That earned him an additional $2,191,023 through the pre-arbitration performance bonus pool part of the new collective bargaining agreement, an improvement for elite players between zero and three years of service time, but still in a system Manoah understands and protests.
