He was an only child. His father, Bienvenido Pujols, was a softball pitcher who struggled with alcoholism. Pujols often had to take his father home when his father got drunk following games. Growing up, Pujols practiced baseball using limes for balls and a milk carton for a glove.
Pujols, his father, and his grandmother immigrated in 1996 to Washington Heights in New York City, where Pujols witnessed a shooting at a bodega.
Partly because of the shooting, they moved to Independence, Missouri, two months later to join some relatives.
700 home runs
Dominican baseball player Albert Pujols hit the 693rd home run of his career on Monday night, which also helped the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0, with only one hit allowed by Jordan Montgomery.
The key moment for Pujols came in the bottom of the seventh inning when he hit his 14th four-corner homer of the season on his big-league farewell tour, making him the fifth player with the most home runs ever and four away from matching Alex Rodriguez’s 696.
Playing in the final season of a career that will most likely end in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame, Pujols hit five home runs in his last seven games and is batting .450 with seven homers and 16 RBIs in the past 15 to continue his climb up the all-time Major League leaders and, in the process, push the Cardinals into the playoffs.
In his 22nd season in the MLB, Pujols is batting .273 with 14 home runs and 37 RBIs in 198 innings. He is already an occasional player against left-handed pitchers, averaging .388 with nine home runs in 85 innings. Over the last 28 games, he’s averaging a .408 OBP and 1.288 OPS.
