The Packers quarterback threw an interception into the end zone to end Green Bay’s first possession against the Detroit Lions.

On Green Bay’s second possession, he did it again. By the end of the game he’d thrown three interceptions in a 15-9 loss that dropped the Packers to 3-6.

The Packers took possession for the first time deep in their own territory after the Lions failed to convert on fourth down at Green Bay’s 7-yard line. They then drove 88 yards to Detroit’s 5-yard line in 12 plays, setting up a first-and-goal.

There, the Packers opted for a play-action pass. Rodgers’ attempt to Allen Lazard was tipped at the line of scrimmage by linebacker Derrick Barnes and popped up into the air. Rookie safety Kerby Joseph secured the loose ball in the end zone for the first interception of his career.

Sunday marked just the fifth time in his 18-year NFL career that he’s thrown three interceptions (his career-high) in a single game.

A difficult season for Aaron Rodgers hit rock bottom on Sunday in Detroit when he threw three interceptions before the end of the third quarter, his highest single-game total in almost five years.

The mistakes from the Packers quarterback came early and often in the NFC North tilt against the Lions, beginning when he threw a pass that was picked off in the end zone by safety Kerby Joseph on Green Bay’s first drive of the game.

On the Packers’ second possession, a Rodgers fourth-down pass was intercepted by 2022 No. 2 pick Aidan Hutchinson at the goal line.

Coming out of the locker room at halftime, the afternoon didn’t get much better for Rodgers. Just over five minutes into the third quarter, the reigning MVP again threw an interception that was snagged inside the five-yard line by Joseph.

All three of the picks came in the red zone, marking the first time in his career that Rodgers had given the ball away while within striking distance of a score.

Sunday’s performance was the first time since 2017 that Rodgers threw three interceptions in a single game and just the fifth time ever—in 236 career starts—he’s reached the unfortunate milestone. The last time he was picked off three times was in Week 15 of the ’17 campaign against the Panthers.

The Packers find themselves on the precipice of a lost year with half a season still to play — a near impossibility in the Aaron Rodgers era before 2022.

After amassing 39 regular-season wins and two NFC Championship Game appearances in the team’s first three seasons under head coach Matt LaFleur, the wheels appear to have officially fallen off following a 15-9 defeat against the previously one-win Detroit Lions.

But for as bleak as things appear and as poorly as he admittedly played on his first three-interception day since 2017, Rodgers is still not ready to wave the white flag.

“When I decided to come back it was all-in, and I don’t make decisions and then hindsight 20/20 have regrets about big decisions like that,” Rodgers told reporters when asked about his decision to forgo retirement over the offseason.

“So it was all-in, and this is a lot of life lessons for sure this year. But luckily it’s not over. There’s a lot of games left. We’ll be counted out — probably by many. And we’ll see how we respond.”

There is a growing amount of evidence for Green Bay to be counted out moving forward.

The Packers have lost five straight contests dating back to their London game against the Giants on Oct. 9, and their most recent defeat against Detroit was born from a cavalcade of mistakes that aren’t necessarily indicative of a good team in a slump.
